BACKGROUND: David Stutz grew up in
Huntington Woods. His parents, George
and Mary Stutz, still reside in the same
home. His father is an attorney and
past president of Temple Israel and the
Goodfellows. His parents are still active
in the Detroit Jewish Community.
He was graduated from Berkley
High School before entering the
University of Michigan. During his
college years, he went on a blind date
with Karen Jones. They realized that
their families were acquaintances, and
they had attended some of the same
childhood birthday parties. After Dr.
Stutz was graduated from the U-M, they
married.
After receiving his medical training
at U-M, he spent two years in the Air
Force developing computer curriculum
for medical assistants in the Air Force
and Navy. In 1976 he taught at the
University of Wisconsin Medical School.
There, he was an active contributor to

and how to strengthen
relations with doctors.

the American College of Physicians'
Computer-Based Exam Project, which
developed computer-simulated patients
for testing.
In 1977 he decided to enter private
practice in Sarasota, Florida. He is
affiliated with Sarasota Memorial
Hospital, where he has served as chief
of staff.
In addition to his geriatric practice
he also has a following in sports
medicine. He is one of the spring team
training physicians for the Chicago
White Sox and Baltimore Orioles.
In response to the number of
questions he received from patients and
friends, he decided to write the book
The Savvy Patient. The book is a guide
for patients on how to make informed
medical decisions and how to strengthen
relationships with doctors.
"It's my observation over the years
that patients need better
communication skills to deal with
doctors;' said Dr. Stutz. ❑
