Local Youth
In War Play

A thought-provoking new
play, The White Rose, recent-
ly opened on the University of
Michigan campus. One of the
leads, Anton Mahler, a Nazi
with an attitude, was played

by Daniel Blatt, Bloomfield
Hills senior.
Daniel, a musical theater
major, transferred to U of M
after two years at Hofstra
University in New York
where he studied voice.
Daniel has performed in sum-
mer stock and has taken film
classes at the University of
Southern California.

The Attic Theatre Guest
Artist Series will present
Detroit's own Betty Carter, 8
p.m. March 1, 7:30 p.m. and
10 p.m. March 2 and 7 p.m.
March 3.
Flint-born and Detroit-
raised Betty Carter won a
talent contest at Detroit's
Paradise Theatre in the 40s.
Within two years, she had
performed with Miles Davis,
Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie
Parker — all in Detroit. In
1952, after several years with
the Lionel Hampton Or-
chestra, she moved to New
York to work on her own.
Her dedication to jazz sing-
ing is characterized by her
scat and improvisational
styles, her original composi-
tions, and her ability to score
her own musical arrange:
ments.
For ticket information, call
the Attic Theatre box office,

outlets, 645 6666.
