BEST OF EVERYTHING I

Retirement Was Short-Lived
For This Restaurant Expert

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

N

of that he didn't enjoy
it at times, but a
steady diet of washing
dishes, watching TV, babysit-
ting with his and wife Mert's
grandchildren, etc., was too
much for someone like him.
And so, as expected, Bud
Sherbow is out of his short
retirement . . . and back do-
ing what he loves best .. .
running a restaurant . . . as
floor manager at Buddy's Piz-
za on Northwestern Highway
from where his "retirement"
took place April 1, 1990 .. .
He's there evenings three
nights a week . . . Tuesday,
Wednesday and Saturday.
Mert is probably glad, too
. . . Having a hubby around
the house morning, noon and
night isn't the easiest thing
in the world . . . Especially
when he starts waiting on or
busing the table at home .. .
And when Bud began seating
guests, that was too much.
Mert says she kept her
fingers crossed that he
wouldn't hand their company
a bill . . . And when they'd go
out to dinner, she'd silently
pray that he wouldn't walk
from table to table asking
how everything was . . . Mert
even hoped that he didn't
start making menus for the
neighbor's dog, who probably
would have thought Bud was
some kind of nut.
Ever since he got out of the
Navy at age 26, after a four-
year stint in 1946, Bud has
been the experienced hand
restaurant owners wanted
because of his trouble-
shooting abilities . . . That's
why his dining experience is
probably among the tops in
this region.
Bud's first job, back in 1946,
was as a bartender for Phil
Moss at his saloon on 12th
and Bagley, across from the
Cunningham's warehouse .. .
Then followed the Ranger Bar
on Michigan Avenue, Red
Diamond Bar on Cass and
Temple, Tuller Hotel, Book-
Cadillac Hotel's Motor Bar on
Washington Boulevard, Sap-
phire Room in the Park
Shelton Hotel on Woodward,
Beauchamps on Six Mile and
Woodward, Menjo's . . . then a
six-year stay as manager of
Jeri's on Woodward between
Six and Seven, another six
years as manager at Scotch 'n
Sirloin on Greenfield and
Northwestern . . . Northwood
Inn, Fox and Hounds, Town
and Country Club, four years

general manager of the Stan-
dard Club in Southfield, day
manager at Chuck Joseph's
on 12 Mile, night manager of
London Chop House, Tam
O'Shanter Country Club,
Topinka's Country House .. .
and Buddy's Pizza on North-
western, where he has been a
stalwart the past six years.
With Bud is Randy Sea-
cock, former food and
beverage director nine-and-a-
half years at Marriot Airport,
and now general manager at
Buddy's on Northwestern, to
which he came a year-and-a-
half ago as manager.
Wes Pikula, former general
manager, is now in charge of
operations for the Buddy's
Pizza chain.
Bob Turner has been night
manager past five months,
sharing the duties with Mike
Worth, who has been night
manager about four years.
A third manager, Richard
Gabbei, has been at Buddy's
Pizza on Northwestern about
a year.
Buddy's was bought by Bill
and Shirlee Jacobs with son
Robert in 1970 . . . Original
site on Conant and Six Mile,
now run for them by per-
sonable Irving Sosnick, was
originally a blind pig . . . by
1945, it had become respect-
able as Buddy's Pizzeria.
The Northwestern and Mid-
dlebelt site opened in 1982
. . . one of five Buddy's
restaurants plus two
carry-outs.

Few would have imagined
back then that the North-
western locale's popularity
would be so much more than
just a pizza operation.
Bud Sherbow may "retire"
again sometime in the future
. . . He says the "easy life"
pleasure is great for going to
the movies, washing dishes,
etc. . . . But don't count on one
of any longevity . . . Like
Mark Twain once said about
quitting smoking, "It's easy.
I've done it a hundred times."
There are those who can
retire gracefully and actually
enjoy it . . . But Bud Sherbow
isn't one of them.
WHILE A 10- or 11-year-
old at West Maple Junior
High, Danny Dunsky had a
choice of taking shop or cook-
ing . . . The son of Harriet
(Bobette Lingerie in Water-
ford) and Bob (Thrifty Drugs
in Pontiac) chose the cooking
class.
And that's where he learn-
ed to bake challah that Har-
riet says Danny has made so
well since a youngster . . . He

continued his first love by at-
tending Arizona State Uni-
versity for Hotel and
Restaurant Management.
Danny has the new Fran
O'Brien's Maryland Crab-
house on Opdyke Road in
Auburn Hills where so
many people stop on their
way to see the Detroit Pistons
at the Palace, the Lions at the
Silverdome, or a good show at
Meadowbrook.
Yes, there is a Fran O'Brien
. . . He was a football player
for Michigan State Universi-
ty who went pro some years
ago and can now be found at
his restaurant in Florida .. .
Dan's dining spot is only the
second Fran O'Brien's Mary-
land Crabhouse to open.
BEST BET Of The Week
. . . "Comedy Night" this
Tuesday, 8 p.m., by Young

Bud Sherbow is
back at Buddy's,
and out of Mert's
hair, three nights
per week.

Variety . . . at Comedy Castle
in Royal Oak . . . $6 at door,
$5 in advance . . . Call
Howard Meyers, 855-7823; or
Eric Clark, 533-7188.
IN A FIRST-TIME move,
Charley's Seafood Tavern on
Maple in West Bloomfield
now has a piano and sax duo
in its lounge Thursday, Fri-
day and Saturday evenings
. . . Scott Stern on piano and
Brian Krinek.

fessionals.
