Mr. Rayfield says, "The con-
gressman tells the rabbi
when (Klein) is convicted, 'I
expected a million angry
Jews in the streets and there's
nothing but silence.' And
that's one of the questions
that disturbed me about the
Pollard case that I try to raise
— why American Jews seem
so constrained to voice their
disagreement with Israeli
policy. And that's probably
the most controversial issue
in the play."
Mr. Rayfield admits to feel-
ing "uncomfortable" that the
play raises questions about
Israel while the nation is
under missile attack. But he
says that part of being a
democratic society is ques-
tioning the policies and ac-
tions of politicians, even in
the most adverse times.
"Questions are being raised
about the actions of political
leaders and how they impact
on the lives of individuals in
the most extreme ways."
Mr. Rayfield says Bitter
Friends has sparked discus-
sions among audience
members in New York,
Chicago and Toronto. "The
most gratifying thing to me is
to see audiences leaving the
theater talking about the
play rather than where to go
for coffee and cake.

"One of the themes in the
play is that asking questions
is a part of the Jewish tradi-
tion . . . You have to ask ques-
tions whether about
American policy, Israeli
policy, or your own reaction to
that policy. And if I leave peo-
ple trying to figure out the
answers on their way out, I
feel I've done my job," he says.
Detroit area opinion leaders
will lead audience discussions
after every Thursday evening
performance during the run
of the play.
The "talkback" leaders are:
Feb. 14, Sharona Shapiro,
area director of the American
Jewish Committee; Feb. 21,
Phil Jacobs, managing editor
of The Jewish News; Feb. 28,
David Gad-Harf, executive
director of the Jewish Com-
munity Council. Joe Stroud,
editor of the Free Press, was
talkback leader Feb. 6.
Reduced-priced previews
will be shown through Feb.
10. Regular performances are
Feb. 13 through Mar. 3. All
shows are on Wednesday,
Thursday, Saturday and Sun-
day evenings at 8 p.m. Sun-
day matinees begin at 2 p.m.
Performances will be given
in the Aaron Deroy Theatre
at the West Bloomfield
Jewish Community Center.
For ticket information, call
the JET office, 788-2900; or
TicketMaster, 645-6666. [1]
