Singer's 'Demon'
At Attic Theater

The Attic Theatre ushers in
the new year with its 100th
production, Teibele and Her
Demon, by Isaac Bashevis
Singer, opening Jan. 23 and
running through Feb. 17,
with preview performances
Jan. 17-20.
For tickets, call the Attic
box office, 875-8284.
The play is based on a short
story by the Nobel Prize win-
ner. This stage adaptation by
Mr. Singer and Ruth Fried-
man showcases Mr. Singer's
magical abilities to call up
desires and demons — not
from hell, but from the depths
of the human heart.
Teibele explores the darker
side of human emotions, as
Alchonon, a sometime
scholar, assumes the role of a
demon to possess the women
he lusts for and later loves.

The play confronts racial
and sexual prejudice,
religious bigotry and faith as
it combines dancing,
theatrics, and the music of
Julius Hemphill.
Using the Harriet Beecher
Stowe classic as the departure
point for an exploration of op-
pression and faith, choreog-
rapher Bill T. Jones has forg-
ed an epic of love and loss,
