Film Theatre
Animation Craft

For one weekend only, the
Detroit Institute of Arts'
popular Detroit Film Theatre
(DFT) series will present the
exclusive area engagement of
The Third Animation
Celebration. Showings will be
on Jan. 25, 26 and 27.
Animation Celebration will
feature dozens of short
animated films from around
the globe. Some of this year's
selections are serious and
powerful examples of the
modern animators' craft,
while others are just plain
hilarious. The subject matter
varies as widely as the direc-
tor and country of origin: a
Soviet animator interprets
Dr. Seuss; a computer
generated lava lamp displays
human characteristics; the
distant relatives of Gumby
have some impressions to do.
Showtimes for The Third
Animation Celebration are 7
and 9:30 p.m. Friday and
Saturday; 4 and 7 p.m. Sun-
day. Tickets are available in
advance at the DIA Ticket Of-
fice or at the door of the
performance.
For information, call DIA,

833-2323.

Room.
The Jan. 29 lecture,
"Michigan Opera Theatre's
Grand Opera Season," will be
presented by a member of the
Michigan Opera Theatre. A
reception will follow.
Feb. 4 will feature the opera
film Carmen starring Placido
Domingo and Julis Miggens-
Johnson.
Feb. 11 will be the ballet
film Carmen starring Maya
Plisetskaya.
All programs are free.
Registration is not required.
