`Jersalem Post'
Staffers Strike
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Jerusalem Post was sur-
rounded by pickets last week
as Israel's English-language
daily endured its first strike
since it was founded 58 years
ago as the Palestine Post.
About 80 members of the
editorial staff walked off the
job to protest preemptory
dismissals by the news-
paper's president and
publisher, Yehuda Levy.
The strikers said they
were prepared to negotiate
dismissals to help the paper
through its financial
difficulties but not in a
"confrontational manner."
They said Levy threatened
to fire them all if they do not
accept special contracts
prepared outside the collec-
tive bargaining process.
Tuesday's edition was put
together by about 20 non-
striking staff members who
are under personal contract.
It was a makeshift job con-
sisting mainly of foreign
news agency copy and a few
local stories published
without bylines.
A front-page message from
the management apologized
to readers for the
"shortcomings of today's
issue caused by a staff
walkout."
Levy, a retired Israel
Defense Force officer with no
previous experience in the
newspaper business, vowed
that the Post would continue
to publish.
Mr. Levy was named
publisher when the Post was
acquired by the Canadian-
based Hollinger Corn-
munications group in 1989.
Jews Targets
In Peru
New York (JTA) — Several
recent acts of terrorist
violence in Peru have been
directed at Jewish targets
there, according to the Anti-
Defamation League.
The violence includes the
bombing of a synagogue and
Jewish businesses and the
kidnapping of a prominent
Jewish industrialist.
Responsibility for most of
the acts has been taken by
the Revolutionary Move-
ment of Tupac Amaru,
which has blamed Jews and
businesses owned by Jews as
symbols of "reactionary
imperialism."
The terrorist group, known
by the Spanish initials
MRTA, claimed responsibili-
ty for the bombing of a syn-
agogue in the capital city of
Lima on Nov. 9.
