French Jews
Seek Aid

Paris (JTA) — The leader
of a delegation of 400 French
Jews just returned from
Israel has asked France to
help the Jewish state on a
humanitarian basis to over-
come the economic problems
arising from the mass im-
migration of Soviet Jews.
The appeal to Prime Min-
ister Michel Rocard was
made by Jean Kahn, presi-
dent of the Representative
Council of French Jewish
Organizations. Mr. Rocard
said _it would be given very
careful consideration.
Mr. Kahn also asked the
French government to pur-
sue the struggle against
racism and anti-Semitism in
all its forms, especially the
resurgence of anti-Semitism
in Eastern European coun-
tries, by contacting their
governments.
The Jewish leader asked
the prime minister for an of-
ficial statement on the
desecration of the historic
Jewish cemetery in Carpen-
tras in southern France last
May by unknown vandals.
Mr. Kahn said a statement
"would put an end to the
false rumors heard lately."
He was referring to allega-
tions in right-wing news-
papers that the French
secret service actually van-
dalized the cemetery in
order to pin the blame on
Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of
the extreme right-wing Na-
tional Front.

Engineers
Asked To Stay

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Association of Engineers
and Architects in Israel is
proposing a $100 million
program to establish jobs for
the estimated 120,000 engi-
neers expected to immigrate
here from the Soviet Union.
The goal is to deter
emigres from leaving the
country in pursuit of more
lucrative jobs abroad.
At least 80 percent of
highly skilled Soviet olim
would not find jobs in their
profession in Israel under
existing circumstances, ac-
cording to Shmuel Sorek,
association chairman.
He said the figure of
120,000, based on the expec-
tation that over 1 million
Soviet Jews will immigrate
here in the next five years, is
triple the number of engi-
neers presently in Israel.
Many of the newcomers
were trained and are experi-
enced in branches of engi-
neering not found in Israel.
