Darkness And Disarray
Continued from preceding page
barred from Israel proper.
And just as Palestinians
have become more radicaliz-
ed during the intifada, 42
percent of the Israelis polled
say they are more
"hawkish" now than they
were at the start of the
uprising.
As to a solution to the
problem, 21 percent of the
people polled support the
"transfer" (expulsion) of Pa-
lestinians, though only 6
percent were in favor of an-
nexing the territories
outright.
At the other end of the
spectrum, 25 percent de-
scribed themselves as being
in favor of a Palestinian
"entity" — but whether that
means autonomy or actual
statehood for the Palestin-
ians is impossible to say,
since the poll refrained from
citing a "Palestinian state"
as one of its options.
Perhaps the most startling
finding, however, was that
after three years of
relentless violence, 45 per-
cent of the Israelis polled
said that their views had not
changed at all — that the in-
tifada, in short, had still not
touched upon their minds or
their lives.
Nevertheless, Israel's
government is feeling the
pressure from below, and in
recent weeks there has been
much talk of streamlining
two telling procedures: for
deporting troublesome Pa-
lestinians, and for issuing
gun licenses to jittery
Israelis.
In the absence of any
movement toward a political
solution, the climate in
Israel, like that in the ter-
ritories, is one of drift
toward extremism. And in
another example of strange
symmetry, both sides are
expecting that any change in
this pattern will come from
without.
But while Palestinians
look to Saddam to rescue
them from their plight,
Israelis fear that once the
Gulf crisis is settled, the
West will impose some sort
of solution to the Arab-
Israeli dispute — or at least
to the Palestinian problem.
Israeli officials have been
predicting the swift demise
of the intifada ever since it
began. Today, after three
years, it is still going strong,
but the expectations of both
sides have changed.
Few Israelis still believe
that the revolt can be quash-
ed or even severely contain-
ed by force. On the Palestin-
ian side people are tired and
considerably sobered.
"They see now that the in-
tifada is going to be a long
haul," Dr. Nusseibeh
observes, "so that they have
to save their energies and
move at a slower pace."
How long before Palestin-
ians can expect to see real
results for their pains? Dr.
Nusseibeh, a self-declared
optimist, speaks of having a
state within 10 to 12 years.
His colleague Abdul Hadi
counts the time in different
terms:
"Until Israel realizes that
it, too, is in a dark tunnel,
right here alongside us." ❑

Jerusalem.

Terrorists Sentenced
For Tel Aviv Beach Raid
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A Lod
military court sentenced to
30 years in prison the 12
Arab terrorists captured in a
failed attempt to attack-
crowded beaches near Tel
Aviv on the Shavuot holi-
day.
The 12 accused, all bet-
ween 20 and 30 years old,
were convicted last month of
membership in a terrorist
organization, illegal posses-
sion of arms and attempted
murder.
The May 30 assault, clear-
ly intended to inflict max-
imum civilian casualties,
was the work of the
Palestine Liberation Front,
a constituent organization of
the Palestine Liberation
Organization headed by
Mohammed (Abul) Abbas,
who masterminded the
Achille Lauro hijack of Oc-
tober 1985.
According to the indict-
ments against the 12, docu-
ments in their possession in-
dicated their orders were to
create carnage on the Tel
Aviv beachfront.
One of their targets was
the U.S. Embassy in Tel
Aviv, the indictment said.
The terrorists had ap-
proached the beach in fast
fiberglass motorboats, which
were launched from a
"mother ship" that sailed
from Libya.
Israeli security forces
killed four of the terrorists
and captured the rest before
they could harm anyone.
