FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1990
+ American Red Cross
_J
Continued from preceding page
and Shabbat observance. "If
I endorse something as a
professional at the JCC, it
has to have those com-
ponents," she said.
Rabbi David Meyer of San
Francisco's Reform Con-
gregation Sherith Israel,
which draws 300 Jewish
singles to its monthly sin-
gles Shabbat service, said he
didn't see the trip "as an ex-
citing, innovative program."
He said the Happening
"sounds to me basically like
a tour aimed at a target
population."
Other American Jewish
singles said the lack of
kosher food or Jewish pro-
gramming wouldn't keep
them from going.
"The festivals, the moun-
tains, the beaches of Rio —
these things would attract
me more than Jewish pro-
gramming," said Pamela
Gorelick of Atlanta.
Added another Atlantan,
Randy Goodman, "If Jewish
singles are going to spend
big money on themselves,
they'd rather go to Club Med
or go skiing than go to Rio
for a week of Jewish semi-
nars. I know people here will
pay two times as much to go
to Virginia Beach for a pure-
ly social gathering as oppos-
ed to going to a camp with a
heavy Jewish content."
Ms. Kronick said the
Israeli-Brazilian dinner,
which will feature a talk by
David Ephrati, Israeli am-
bassador to Brazil, is
"Jewish."
"We're doing what we
think is a wonderful, ex-
citing event: a cultural
exchange among Jewish
people, Jews meeting Jews."
The eight-day program for
Jewish singles age 20 and up
will feature visits to such
tourist attractions as the Rio
Carnaval and artisan fairs.
To date, 400 Jewish sin-
gles from seven countries
have made reservations,
with about a third coming
from Europe, 137 from the
U.S. and still others from
South Africa and South
America, according to Ms.
Kronick.

Congress Adds
Jewish Content
For those interested in
more Jewish content dur-
ing the "First World Jew-
ish Singles Happening"
Feb. 15-22 in Rio de
Janeiro, the American
Jewish Congress is offer-
ing its own tour package.
Geoffrey Weill,
AJCongress international
travel program director,
said the organization's
tour, which will run con-
currently with Happen-
ing, will include a visit
Feb. 19 to Rio's
Copacabana Synagogue,
which is Ashkenazic, plus
a meeting with Brazilian
rabbis and lay leaders.
The Congress also will in-
clude a Shabbat kiddush
Feb. 15, the first night of
the Happening, and a
Shabbat dinner Feb. 22.
"We wouldn't do it (add
the special event) without
there being a need for
Jewish content," said Mr.
Weill. "That's why we
added it."

As long as the soul animates
man, and longs for light and
thirsts for beauty, man
needs the fountain of poetry.
