and very beautiful, but
Brazil is a Third World
country. It's not easy to do
things there — it's not
America, where the hotel
calls the mashgiach, he
comes in and kashers the
kitchen and it's kosher," Ms.
Kronick said.
But, she added, fish and
vegetarian meals will be
available for those re-
questing them.
The sheer number of hotels
reserved for the Happening
— six for 1,200 Jewish sin-
gles expected from around
the world — precluded
kashering the kitchens, add-
ed Lisa Belle, Ms. Kronick's
partner in the Happening.
Ms. Belle, who resides in
Rio, described its Jewish
community of about 40,000
as small and poor with one
kosher restaurant.
However, Rabbi Pinchas
Stolper, executive director of
the Union of Orthodox Jew-
ish Congregations of
America (UOJCA), disputed
the difficulty in kashering
the kitchens. "It sounds like
a lot of baloney to me," he
said.
"We have kashered kitch-
ens in many places around
the world — most recently in
Moscow, Kiev and Len-
ingrad in the Soviet Union
and for last year's Council of
Jewish Federations General
Assembly in New Orleans,"
the rabbi said. "There's no
place you can't make a kit-
chen kosir or bring in
kosher food if you want to."
The tour plans dismayed a
number of Jewish singles
leaders around the United
States.
Leanie Gunsberg, director
of the Detroit Jewish Com-
munity Center's singles
department, listed the tour
in her December calendar as
one of three available for
Jewish singles, but said she
"would prefer to promote a
cruise that would have more
Jewish content, to cater to"
Reform, Conservative and
Orthodox Jews.
"If this is going to be the
`First World Jewish Singles
Happening,' it should be
programmed for people who
observe their religion in
different ways," she said.
Chana Shapiro, singles
supervisor of the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center,
underscored what Mrs.
Gunsberg said: "This is just
one more example of the dis-
enfranchisement of that (Or-
thodox) segment of the Jew-
ish community," she said.
Sharon Mond, singles di-
rector of the Baltimore Jew-
ish Community Center, said
she didn't promote the tour
due to the lack of kosher food
