What's the matter
with kids today?

They're not members of the JCC!! Think
of all they're missing! Splashing in our
pools, playing "hoops" in our gyms &
playing racquet sports.
Not to mention our playgrounds, classes
& programming to fill up some of their
free time. And there is certainly nothing
the matter with the price of a general
membership for kids.

Jewish Content Minimal
For 'Happening' In Rio

RICHARD PEARL

Staff Writer

T

he "First World Jew-
ish Singles Happen-
ing" scheduled for Rio
de Janeiro next February, is
stirring controversy over the
level of Jewish content, or
lack of it, planned for the
week-long event.
While the program is aim-
ed at Jewish singles and will
include a talk by the Israel
ambassador to Brazil, it will
not provide kosher food or
Sabbath services.
In addition, a trip to a
statue of Jesus that stands
on a mountain overlooking
the Brazilian city is promi-
nently featured as part of
the Happening.
Said Dave Weintraub of
Baltimore, who operated the
Jewish Singles Information
Service in Baltimore and
Washington, D.C., for 15
years, "I think (the- trip to
the Christ statue) is a shon-
da (shame)." He said he can
accept tours of historical
sites, but questioned the
propriety of featuring this
particular site on a Jewish
singles tom..
However, tour coordinator

Maxine Kronick, a former
resident of Flint, defended
the trip to the statue, calling
it "one of the artistic
marvels of the world, like
the Sphinx in Egypt. It's
one of the most famous
structural and sculptural —
if there is such a word —
pieces of art in the world.
You have to ask, 'How did
they get that to the top of the
mountain?'
"I went to the Sistine
Chapel when I visited Italy,

Ms. Kronick said
the Israeli-
Brazilian dinner is
"Jewish."

but I didn't pray. If you're
offended by the statue, you
don't have any business on
the tour." She said the
mountaintop provides a
spectacular view of the city
and surrounding area.
Ms. Kronick, a native New
Yorker who lived in Flint 20
years before making aliyah
in 1987, said kosher food
would not be available be-
cause of what she said is the
difficulty in getting hotel
kitchens kashered in Brazil.
"Rio is a very exotic place
