There's a nip in the air, the
leaves are turning and the
kids have gone back to school.
All sure signs that autumn is
here.
Take advantage of the extra
time indoors to enjoy some
seasonal snacking at its best.
These recipes allow even the
youngest cooks to get
involved.
Pumpkin is commonly asso-
ciated with autumn and
harvest-time, with popular
usage as a candle-lit decora-
tion or as a pie ingredient.
What is less well known is
that pumpkin is believed to
have originated in North
America and that this nutri-
tious vegetable became a
staple in the diets of the early
colonists.
Figs are a treat that can be
enjoyed both as out-of-hand
snacks, and as additions to
most recipes. These popular
dried fruits are exceptionally
good when used in baked
goods and desserts. Their
sweetness and natural
moistening qualities help
keep cakes and cookies flavor-
ful and prevent dryness well
beyond normal shelf life.
Try these recipes for
cookies, doughnuts and cakes
with the flavor of fall. All
pack nicely in brown bag
school lunches, or as after-
school treats.

4 teaspoons water
food colorings
"M&M's" Plain Chocolate
Candies
For cookies, beat together
sugar and margarine until
light and fluffy. Blend in egg
and vanilla. Add combined
flour and baking powder, mix-
ing until well blended. Shape
as directed below for either
Cookie Pops or Cookie People.
Bake at 375°F. for 8 - to 10
minutes or until edges are
very lightly browned. Cool
about 1 minute on cookie
sheet. Remove to wire rack;
cool completely. Decorate as
directed below.
Makes about 1 dozen large
cookies.
Cookie Pops: For each
Cookie Pop, shape 2 level
tablespoons dough to form
ball. Place on ungreased
cookie sheet; flatten with
glass dipped in additional
granulated sugar to make 3-
inch circle. Insert flat wooden
stick into edge of cookie. Bake
as directed above. Decorate as
directed below.
Cookie People: For each
Cookie Person, shape 1 level
tablespoon dough into ball for
body; shape 1 level tablespoon
dough into ball for head; and
shape 1 level teaspoon dough
into 2- to 3-inch ropes for each
arm and leg. Assemble
shaped dough pieces on
ungreased cookie sheet to
form people running, dancing,
etc. Flatten with bottom of
glass dipped in additional
granulated sugar to 1/4-inch
thickness. Bake as directed
above. Decorate as directed
below.
To Decorate: For decora-
tion, combine confectioners'
sugar and water, mixing until
smooth. Divide glaze into sep-
arate cups; color each as
desired with 1 to 2 drops food
coloring. With small paint
brush, apply glaze to baked
and cooled cookies to make
faces, clothes, etc. Use a dot of
glaze to secure chocolate can-
dies onto cookies for eyes,
mouths, buttons, etc.
