FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 1990
I BEST OF EVERYTHING I
S
orry, Coco, no dogs
allowed, even though
the place has same
name as you . . . And so, our
French poodle had to stay
home and eat treats during
the recent pre-grand opening
of Coco's Pub and Grill,
Greenfield and 10 Mile.
It's the former site of Jakk's
Lounge, previously owned by
Jack Freedman, then Ed
Goldberg, Herb Goldberg and
Harold Allen, and Dick
LaCombe . . . now as Coco's,
it's a sports bar with limited
menu and all tables and
chairs surrounded by televi-
sion sets in the four corners,
a Wall of Fame for personali-
ty signatures, machine game,
etc.
Big grand opening will
come when Greenfield road
repairs are completed on con-
struction of two more lanes
. . . Coco's is owned by Ray
Acho, with Al Nehru, general
manager; Joe Hakim, food
manager and Ray Awady,
manager.
Marshall Rachleff coming
all evenings in different
sports outfits . . . Detroit
Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings
. . . Dave Katz, Dollie Hintz,
Segrid Melvin, Mickey
Vassel, Sam Glassman, Jen-
nifer Abramson, Jack
Chaney, Ken Feldman, Bon-
nie and Dave Miller, who met
at 1987 Oak Park 20-year
reunion of '67 grads and were
wed a year later; Joe Stella,
Sharon Mermell.
Dave Miller had one of the
leads with Ted Lange in the
1971 Broadway production of
Hair, and was also in the
Detroit production . . . When
Lange appeared in Driving
Miss Daisy at the Birm-
ingham Theatre, he and Dave
spent much time together.
Dave is looking for
members of the Detroit Hair
cast for a reunion . . .
Members included Suzie
Stein, Jody Pearlman, Gloria
Goldman and others . . . Call
him at 544-2664.
IF VARIETY,
The
Children's Charity, lucks out
with its movie premiere as
last year, 2nd Annual
"Lights, Camera, Auction"
should be another biggie .. .
It's set for Nov. 14 at the
Northland Theatre, now own-
ed by City of Southfield.
First one had Bruce Willis
and In Country slated to be
shown, but it appeared on
another local movie screen in-
stead . . . and didn't have too
long a run anywhere . . .
Variety wound up with the
premiere of sleeper Look
Who's Talking which became
a big box office smash .. .
Last year's "L,C,A," cleared
$57,000 at its live auction .. .
Chairfolks of the second an-
nual are Dee Shapiro and Liz
and Jerry Walters.
May 5 has been set and Ritz
Carlton the place for Variety's
big Celebrity Ball honoring
the Mike and Marion Ilitch
family.
CONGRATS ... to Mollie
and Jack Stein, former
Detroiters now living in
Miami, Florida . . . on their
50th anniversary . . . Recent
celebration at Adat Shalom
was given by their children,
Rosalie Stein and Susie and
Mark Feldman . . . Most of
the original wedding party
from 50 years ago was in at-
tendance . . . and the lun-
cheon catering was done by
Mollie's sister and brother-in-
law, Sarah and Al Rosenberg
. . . Frankie Paul on the accor-
dian entertained as he did at
Mollie and Jack's 25th.
REUNION DEPT. ...
Central High School Class of
1941 has already set date and
place for number 50 . . . Will
be Sept. 21, 1991, at the Troy
Marriott . . . For more info,
call Betty Jane Herman,
357-1954.
WHEN THEY stay away
from disco and top 40 rock
tunes, Suzie March and
Daniel Warren can compete
with the best of them
. . . At least this is so at Ex-
calibur nitery, Franklin at 12
Mile off Northwestern, where
the duo is currently appear-
ing through August . . .
Excalibur calls for songs folks
can relate to, and many tunes
they played suddenly had peo-
ple dancing . . . "How High
The Moon," Sarah Vaughn's
great hit; Fats Waller's "Ain't
Misbehavin'," Billy Holiday's
"Lover Man," Dinah
Washington's wonderful "Un-
forgettable," "People," made
famous by Barbara Streisand,
"New York, New York" and a
host of others, including a
fine array of Latin beat
rhythms. Susie is on vocals
and Daniel on keyboard and
synthesizer.
PAT WEISLING paints a
daily picture of pleasantness
as ace salesgal at Bricker-
Tunis Furs on Orchard Lake
Rd.. . . and her talents go far
beyond in the world of ar-
tistry . . . This Sunday, Pat's
one-woman show of crisp con-
temporary watercolors and
poured oil paintings entitled
"Hot Colors" will be at Route
10 Gallery on Northwestern
Hwy. . . . She'll be at the in-
formal opening reception
Sunday, open to all 2 p.m. to
5 p.m. . . . Her show of 18 to
20 oils and watercolors at
Route 10 Gallery runs
through Sept. 16.
ANNUAL BINGO and
Auction by City of Hope Mr.
and Mrs. Group, is Sept. 11, 7
p.m. at Roma's of Bloomfield
. . . For info and tickets, call
Sarah Fishkind, 357-5035; or
Marcia Amhowitz, 788-9559.
BIRTHDAY CONGRATS
... to Shirley Berman . . . and
to son David Berman on
number 31 . . . to Fran Beresh
. . . to Richard Litt on number
50 (his wife's name is Ellie,
not Judy, as errata'd.)
ONE OF THE reasons
"Strolling Dinner" has
become a popular listing on
charitable and benefit invites
would be that folks can
donate to a worthy cause
while sampling the goodies of
many restaurants . . . In other
words, having their cake and
eating it, too . . . while also
seeing the likes of Gregory
Hines.
About 30 chefs will have
their best food wares
available at "One Spectacular
Night With Gregory Hines,"
Sept. 19 at the Fisher Theatre
. . . $75 to AIDS research by
Kaplan Medical Institute lets
folks also gulp appetizers
from Rattlesnake Club, Truf-
fles, Hella's and Ginopolis . . .
Main courses from London
Chop House, Caucus Club,
Ristorante di Modesta,
Golden Mushroom, Mario's,
Le Metro, Sultan's, Pegasus,
Haymakers, and others.
If donation is $100 or $150,
attendees can gulp the goodie
pastries and candies from
Home Sweet Home, Platinum
Treats, Gayle's Chocolates,
Stemma's and Hotel St. Regis
that'll be served at the
afterglow party following
Gregory Hine's performance
. . . He will attend the party
. . . For more info and tickets,
call Honorary Chairman Lou
Golden, 758-1040; Les Lee
Roland, 559-1144; Goldie
Eskin, 967-4720; or Bob and
Doreen Benson, 540-4605.
GET WELL WISHES ...
to Mark Larco.

Riviera, Marietta and Ernest
