How to turn a paper plate
into a $19.95 dinner for two.

tearing himself away from his
old apartment, crying when
he saw the home where he
had once shared cramped
quarters with his parents
and grandmother.
"It was mind-boggling," he
says. "I went down to the
cellar — each family had a
storage room in cellar — it
was so horrible.
"We would store coal and
potatoes there. Toward the
end of the winter, we didn't
know which was the coal,
which was the potatoes."
The ride back in time was
a bumpy one, albeit not
without its pleasant side
trips. "I found my bicycle in
cellar," says Mr. Smirnoff. "I
found some play toys I had
made, my sled."
And he found an even
greater appreciation for the
freedom he had at home in
America. "Life there," Mr.
Smirnoff says of the Soviet
Union, "is not fun, no matter
who you are. They are in a
survival mode.
"They are rude to you
everywhere — not because
they are bad people. But it's
like the people in New York;
they are rude because they
are in that mode."
Normally, says the comic,
he would not be in a mood to
stand in line for a ham-
burger. "But I stood in one
for about 4 hours at
McDonald's. It was a taste of
tradition" — especially
when one hungers for a fa-
miliar sign of American life
so far from home.
Smirnoff was not alone on
the trip. Besides the
Showtime crew, he was ac-
companied by his wife and
"my nonborn baby."
There were some
difficulties for his wife. "She
had morning sickness — but
then," a pregnant pause, "it
could have been the Russian
food."
Glasnost has not improved
the gourmet scene, says Mr.
Smirnoff. "I go ,into restau-
rant and ask what they
have. 'We have garlic
chicken.' I say, 'Oh, I don't
like garlic.' The waiter says,
`Don't worry. We don't have
garlic.'
If food is in short supply, Mr.
Smirnoff's humor is not. He
said he offered to take his
parents, who live in the Los
Angeles area, back to Russia
with him.
"They didn't want to.
Why? The California lottery
was up to $52 million that
week." El
