handicapped boyfriend, due
to his parent's intervention.
She turned to Maayan and,
last September, she married
a handicapped man with se-
vere asthma and back prob-
lems.
Maayan hopes to expand
its services worldwide, and
follow up successful clients
with support groups to help
make the marriages work.
They would also like to
someday open a facility in
which handicapped couples
could live.
But for now, Rabbi Scharf
and his family are busy try-
ing to match up as many
handicapped clients as
possible. "We're far from ex-
perts," says Rabbi Scharf,
"and we're trying to get
better. It's not easy, but it
can be done."
The key to success: "we
take away the handicap and
look at the person." ❑
