GARDEN

There are perennial and annual
types. If choosing a perennial type that
is hardy to your area, there is no need
to keep replanting year after year. Taller
types should be cut back in the spring.
Clumps can occasionally be divided.
That's pretty much all there is to it.

Dwarf Conifers

Another trend is the increasing ap-
pearance of dwarf conifers in small
suburban or city yards. But these also
come in handy in large gardens, es-
pecially close to houses where gard-
eners wish to control the height and
width of evergreens. It pays to include
shrubs that hold their needles all year

grow slowly. Some may not put on
more than one-fourth or one-half inch
of new growth in a season. Imagine
how long these can contribute to a
landscape without having to be
trimmed much or replaced.
Dwarfs offer a wide variety of shapes
and textures. Many different shades of
green, ranging from yellow to blue, can
be purchased. It's possible to plant a
whole garden just of dwarf evergreens
although most people like to inter-
sperse them with annual or perennial
flowering plants. They also may be suc-
cessfully combined with broadleaf
azaleas and rhododendrons.

Ornamental Pools

There's something about water, still
or running, that lends a magic touch
to any garden. Landscape architects
have been adding this important ingre-
dient for years. Many homeowners are
now discovering that they can con-
struct their own if they have any do-it-
yourself talents at all.
Occasionally, someone will simply
sink an old leak-proof tub or bathtub
into the ground, surround its edges
with rocks and put in a few water lilies.
But there are now more sophisticated
