Taller types should be cut back in the spring. Clumps can occasionally be divided. That's pretty much all there is to it. Dwarf Conifers Another trend is the increasing ap- pearance of dwarf conifers in small suburban or city yards. But these also come in handy in large gardens, es- pecially close to houses where gard- eners wish to control the height and width of evergreens. It pays to include shrubs that hold their needles all year around to provide interesting dark shapes during the winter months when everything else is bare. Often the homeowner's favorite coni- fers tend to grow fast and require con- stant yearly trimming. In time, when they become overgrown, many may actually have to be replaced. Dwarfs grow slowly. Some may not put on more than one-fourth or one-half inch of new growth in a season. Imagine how long these can contribute to a landscape without having to be trimmed much or replaced. Dwarfs offer a wide variety of shapes and textures. Many different shades of green, ranging from yellow to blue, can be purchased.
