sizes or liners. The latter is more difficult
to install but gives the homeowner the
option of whatever shape he wishes.
If all this sounds like too much work,
hire someone to do it for you.
Once the pool is in, the gardener
has the fun of ordering and planting
the proper water lilies. There are hardy
and tropical types available in a won-
derful assortment of colors from blues
and lavenders to pinks and maroons,
yellows and whites. Different lilies need
differing amounts of sun to bloom pro-
perly. In northern areas, the tender
tropical water lilies must be wintered
over indoors.

Rock Gardens

Ever consider a rock garden to perk
up your property? These have been
popular for years and continue so.
For those who already have an out-
cropping of rock on their property,
such a creation is simple. Visit your
local nursery and find out what Alpine
plants can be tucked into the soil
pockets inbetween the rocks. Alpine
plants are most often used because
they like the good drainage provided
in such a set-up.
For those who want to produce a
rock garden from scratch it's another
story. The ideal is to create something
that looks like Mother Nature did it. This
isn't easy to do. Consult with your near-
by garden center to see what kind of
rocks and plants are available and get
some guidelines on how to go about
this.

Perennial Borders

Perennial borders have been around
for a long time but the popularity of
these plants now seems to be enjoy-
ing a revival. That's due partly to the
fact that garden centers carry a wider
range of container-grown specimens
than ever before. This means the
gardener can plant them at almost any
time of the season that the soil is
workable.
A warning, however. Many people
seem to think these beauties require
no work. It's true that once these plants
(hardy to that particular area, of
course) are put in the ground, they will
keep coming up year after year. But in
time, depending on how fast the
