BACKGROUND: Brad Keywell was raised
in West Bloomfield and has lived in the
same house since he was born. His
family has a long history of Jewish
involvement in Detroit. Keywell's
paternal grandparents were founding
members of Temple Israel, while his
father, Frederic, is the immediate past
president.
"My Judaism is important to my
values," says Keywell who is currently
on the board of gove-rnors at the Hillel
Foundation of the University of
Michigan. During his teen years, he was
also active at Temple Israel,
participating in the youth group and
being confirmed.
As a teenager he attended Cranbrook
where he developed his writing skills. "I
was motivated by the environment," he
recalls. His first foray in writing was
the script for his sister's bat mitzvah
candlelighting. Today he continues to
write poems and other creative pieces.
Keywell also developed some
entrepreneurial skills at an early age.
He sold greeting cards as a teenager.
Today his capitalistic ventures are
posters. He and Andy Friedman of
Huntington Woods created and
distributed 10,000 University of
Michigan wall calendars, which they
financed by selling advertising to
campus retailers. They are also working
on a student welcoming guide and a
student discount card business.
Keywell formed Key Creations to
market the poster "Painting the Perfect
Picture" which is a modern U-M logo.
He held an art contest offering $25 and
15 percent of the gross profits to the
person who could design an updated
version of the block letter M. After
placing Michelle Nagel's modern M
design with vibrant colors on a poster,
he sold 1,200 posters to 26 different
retailers across the state. He then
created and marketed another poster,
"Michigan's Decade of Champions;"
which is now sold in Detroit and Ann
Arbor.
When Keywell is neither studying nor
working on business projects, he is
active in sports. As a former tennis
medalist in the North American
Maccabi Youth Games, he still enjoys
the sport. Last summer he was tennis
director at Camp Tanuga in Kalkaska.
This summer he will be studying for the
law school admission exam. Although
he is involved in many projects, he has
one motto: "To thyself be true."
