"We have to bring Jewish
meaning to whatever we
do," said Rubin, who serves
as a mashgiach or kosher
supervisor at the Stoller
Fisheries Co. processing
plant. "To encourage people
to come to more events, we
should make them more
Jewish."
But the 35-year-old Rubin
probably won't be going to
any more singles functions.
Less than three weeks ago,
he received a call from Jill S.
Meyer, a physician and or-
thodox Jew in Hastings,
Neb. Both had contacted the
Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
about meeting someone Or-
thodox in the Midwest.
"We talked three times

over the phone," he said.
"We made lots of money for
the phone company."
When the conference end-
ed Sunday, Rubin drove 200
miles at top speed to meet
Meyer.
At about midnight, Rubin
asked Meyer to marry him.
And she said yes.
The wedding is set for May
12. Rubin plans to leave his
job and move to Hastings
where Meyer is continuing
her advanced studies to
become a psychiatrist.
But marriage might not
take Rubin entirely out of
singles life. He said he wants
to help others.
"It's a mitzvah to help
people find their mates,"
Rubin said. "And I will." ❑

YPS board members in ad-
dition to Garmo include
Lesley Wolfe, president of
JPS; Garmo's wife, Kathy
Meurer; Scott Lantz and
Ken Willhoft.
Garmo said board mem-
bers created JPS in response
to what they felt is a lack of
activities for Jewish singles
in the metro area. He said
each board member has
specific duties to assure the
rafting trips will come off as
scheduled.

JNF Working
For Absorption

Jerusalem (JTA) —
Bolstered by an enlarged
budget, the Jewish National
Fund says it plans to assist
the absorption of thousands
of new immigrants through
its regular land reclamation,
afforestation and educa-
tional activities.
The JNF Board of Direc-
tors has approved a $100
million budget for fiscal
1990-91 starting April 1, a
14 percent increase over the
last fiscal year.
The JNF plans to assist
the government's Housing
Ministry by developing land
for immigrant housing and
join the Tourism Ministry in
the creation of new parks
and recreation areas to
expand and improve the
tourist infrastructure.
Both endeavors will create
jobs for new immigrants as
well as for discharged
soldiers and residents of de-
velopment towns.
