Last summer 500 people
ages 18-39 spent seven days
together in Israel

such shows at the Route 10
Gallery, Shapiro says. And
they're not wasting any time
in getting started. An exhibit
by a small group of East Lan-
sing artists called the Iguana
Arts Coalition began March
17. The show is benefiting the
Michigan Humane Society.

In June, Shapiro and
Schwartz will sponsor, along
with the Novi Town Center, a
spring art fair.
Future plans also include
papermaking classes this
spring and summer at the
gallery, taught by paper artist
Schwartz; an art fair this fall
in Walled Lake; and publica-
tion of a newsletter to keep in-
terested parties informed on
what's happening at the
Route 10.
In the two-room, 750-
square-foot gallery, visitors
today will find the abstract
watercolors and acrylics of
West Bloomfield's Jo Rosen
and Albert Friedman; the
pastels and painted art fur-
niture of Oak Park's Tim
Yanke; one-of-a-kind jewelry
pieces by area artists Mary
Fuller and Cheryl Anderson
and others; raku pottery by
Florida Artist Win Glazier;
the collage artwork Of Royal
Oak's Pat Chmielewski; the
tables by Ferndale artists
Laura and Jonathan Kinney;
and scrap-and-rag dolls
created by Lee Musselman.
"We won't take all the work
we see, of course," Shapiro
says. "But we'll look at
anyone's work. I think there
is just a wealth of people that
are coming out with just
wonderful things.
"Our first criterion is that
the work be original and
handmade. And we always
look for contemporary art."
All pieces are placed at the
gallery on consignment.
"We've found that we like
that format because it allows
us to be much more free with
our choices. I couldn't take a
piece like this, for instance,"
she says, inthcating a large,
oil painting of a red nude
figure, "if it wasn't on con-
signment, because that's not
an easy kind of piece to sell.
But this way, I can because I
know I'm not going to be liv-
ing with it forever."
In her spare moments,
Shapiro devotes time to advis-
ing emerging artists.

Other shows planned for
the future include an exhibit
beginning April 17 which will
feature the work of several
glass artists as part of the an-
nual Michigan Glass Month
celebration. The work of
Franklin Hills photographer,
Caren Nederlander, will be
featured in May at the
gallery.
