BEST OF EVERYTHING I

Palatial Atmosphere, Relaxation
Achieved At The Compri Club

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

I

magine sitting in a sim-
ulated palatial living
room of 5,000 square feet
. . . with floor to ceiling win-
dows, marble floors, library
stocked with books and
periodicals, large-screen
television, work desks with
speaker telephones.
This is what guests receive
in the relaxing comfort of
Compri Club at Compri Hotel
on American Drive off
Franklin Road in Southfield.
Soft sofas, chairs, spacious
surroundings of sheer delight
in the living room-style
lounge concept developed at
Compri Hotel.
Even an initimate bar with
marble top and small
meeting room available for
guests without charge.
The unusual Compri Club
overlooking an outside patio
area looks like the lobby of a
sumptuous hotel with its tall,
round floor-to-ceiling columns
. . . yet is not a lobby.
A small kitchen serves
breakfast Monday through
Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and
Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m.
to 11 a.m. . . . Dinners all
seven days are 5 p.m. to 10
p.m. . . . Lunches are by ban-
quet only.
The status and image af-
forded by more expensive
hotels is achieved at Compri
in its overall picture . . . The
Compri Club in itself
eliminates the discomfort of
sitting alone in a hotel lounge
or restaurant because of its
accessibility for socializing.
An indoor swimming pool,
whirlpool, sauna and exercise
equipment are all available
without charge to guests.
Compri Hotel opened its
doors on June 1, 1988, across
from American Center in
Westview Office Park.
It is seven stories high, with
200 well-appointed rooms
which many look upon with
oversized satisfaction.
Concept is to give the at-
home atmosphere by pro-
viding many amenities . . .
and Compri Club seems to
have achieved this end.
PRIME RIB dinner price
of $6.95 at Southfield Mariott
Hotel on Northwestern ser-
vice drive off Lahser is for
everyone . . . Friday, Satur-
day, Sunday and Monday .. .
not just hotel guests . . . It is
served in the 70-seater dining
room with 11-chair marble
top bar located off Southfield
Mariott's lobby.

INSTEAD OF just calling
it The Ballroom, Ritz-Carlton
Dearborn will name their 850
to 950 new catering beauty
The Grand Ballroom . . .
Restaurant at Ritz-Carlton is
called The Restaurant . . .
and its grill is The Grill.
Because of timetable delays,
opening of what already looks
to be a lavish grand ballroom
at Ritz-Carlton Dearborn will
be in March rather than
February . . . From what I
saw, getting bookings will
hardly be a problem . . . with
both kosher and non-kosher
catering available.
Weekend of Etiquette Savy
program at Ritz-Carlton
Dearborn is Feb. 24-25 .. .
with young guys and gals
8-12 learning the value and
importance of proper eti-
quette in today's society.
It includes personal instruc-
tion and participation in pro-
per table manners and table
settings, etc. . . . The children
will also work side-by-side
with Pastry Chef Jack Elias.
End will be a dance gala
held after dinner, with the
youngsters given ballroom
dancing instruction.

BERKSHIRE HILTON

Hotel has entered the Ann
Arbor nightlife scene . . . Its
Polo Club restaurant and
lounge is now a nightclub
featuring live entertainment.
Some of the seating in the
Polo Club has been removed
for a dance floor and live band
entertainment . . . Now ap-
pearing is the five-piece
Noveuate group with top 40
hits, standards and 60s dance
music, Tuesday through
Saturdays.
Daily happy hours are with
different themes for its com-
plimentary hors d'oeuvres .. .
Tuesday, Mexico; Wednesday,
German; Thursday, pizza
Italiano; and Friday, carved
roast beef Americana . . . Polo
Club also serves light fare .. .
A full-service restaurant, the
Vanderbilt Room, is located
next to the Polo Club.
Berkshire Hilton is on
Hilton Blvd. at State Street
and 1-94 in Ann Arbor.
IN ADDITION to the
name change and Sheraton
franchise affiliation, the
former Michigan Inn on J.L.
Hudson Drive, now the
Sheraton Southfield, also
received a total renovation
costing about $4.5 million.
Remodeling included lobby
and front desk area, updating
decor in the guest rooms, cor-
ridors, meeting facilities and
the health club . . . Two new

restaurants and a lounge and
the health club . . . Two new
restaurants and a lounge
were renamed and developed.
Seasons Cafe (previously
Benchmark) is the hotel's
upscale dining spot with
prices ranging from moderate
to high and the ambiance ex-
cellent as before, as tables
look out over a garden
walkway and pond.
Ginger's Eatery is the
hotel's all-day dining outlet
. . . with casual atmosphere
and contemporary selections.
Lively gathering spot for
daytime sporting events,
after-work relaxation or
nighttime dancing is called
Nickels Lounge, former
Dewey's and Red Parrot locale
. . . Located just off the main
lobby, it has six wide-screen

video monitors . . . Disc
jockey-controlled music
videos play daily after 5 p.m.
in a casual atmosphere with
overstuffed chairs and comfor-
table lounge stools.
DAYS HOTEL on W. Nine
Mile east of Southfield
(former Southfield Hilton)
has They're Playing Our Song
running Friday and Saturday
eves through February, with
a special Feb. 14 Valentine's
Day performance.
It's by Days Hotel and Taps
Ltd. (Theatre Arts Produc-
tions) with dinner at 7:30 p.m.
and show 9 p.m.
For lunch, don't forget that
Loophole's Restaurant in
Days Hotel has turkey-
burgers.
MAIL DEPT.. . . "My hus-
band made a reservation in a
non-smoking area for two peo-
ple at the Golden Mushroom.
Upon arrival we were inform-
ed that the only table
available for us was in a
smoking section. We told
them this was unacceptable
because I am asthmatic and
irritated by smoke. Manage-
ment stated that presently no
one was smoking. Still, they
would not guarantee the next
seating would remain a non-
smoking section. The reply
was, those patrons have just
been served their entree and
the tables would be occupied
at least an additional hour.
We asked why they accepted
our reservation for non-
smoking and did not save a
table in that section. Their
response was, you may re-
