A Little Lake House
Beats The Commute
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
T
hey had discussed
moving and decided to
wait awhile . . . That
is, she did but hubby Dr.
Keith West didn't.
Five years ago, he married
a Venezualan gal from
Caracus . . . Keith and wife
Sonya have a home there, to
which he had been going .. .
one of the few persons around
who commuted regularly to
Venezuela.
Recently, Keith wanted
1990 to start off with a bang
. . . so he bought a 7,500
square foot home on Cass
Lake with which to surprise
Sonya.
Keith called and told her to
come here with their two
children and celebrate New
Year's Eve.
In the meantime, he had
Toss-A-Party put a giant red
ribbon around the house to
make it look gift-wrapped .. .
plus balloons inside and
outside.
Keith picked her up at the
airport and drove out to the
surprise saying he had to
make a stop.
Sonya's reaction on seeing
their new home here . . . a big
scream of joy.
1990 CELEBRITY Ball by
Variety Club of Detroit will be
a black tie affair, May 5, at
the Westin Hotel downtown.
Gene Taylor, radio
showman, will be emcee .. .
with humanitarian award go-
ing to Frank Newman, presi-
dent and chief executive of-
ficer of F & M Drugs, and
pioneer award to Alan Teitel
of Teitel Brokerage.
Heart awards will be
presented to Chuck Daly,
Detroit Pistons coach, sports;
Tom Ryan, radio personality,
media; David Lawrence,
former Detroit Free Press
publisher, community ser-
vice; songstress Sheri
Nichols and accompanist
Richard Berent, entertain-
ment; and one for me,
journalism.
Dancing will be to Johnny
Trudell and his orchestra.
CONGRATS . . . to Randy
Marcuson . . . on his 33rd
brithday.
COCO'S DEPT. ...
`Wonder if the fire hydrants,
trees and grass are any dif-
ferent down Florida way?
That's where I'll be going for
my first visit come March 1.
Place called Boynton Beach,
where they say dogs have a
tail-wagging good time." .
HERE'S DIFFERENT
kind of celebration . . . 2nd
anniversary of West Bloom-
field legalizing their home to
teach music . . . It's being
feted by Betty and Jerry
Stasson . . . All started when
they were given a violation
for music lessons at the house
. . . With Senator Jack Faxon,
the couple are currently
working to make teaching of
music in homes legal in the
entire state of Michigan .. .
Betty Kowalski Stasson is a
pianist and hubby Jerry a
violinist.
TODY BARNETT will
make sure all the oil is off
next time she has a massage
. . . Slid off the table at an out-
of-town spa and suffered in-
jury that required walking
with a cane.
A FAMILY tradition has
come a long way since its
beginning when Jerry Efros
This surprise was
7,500 sq. ft. and
came gift wrapped.
opened his first drug store
back in 1949 on Geneva and
Nine Mile in Oak Park.
Three of his four sons have
followed as pharmacists serv-
ing three generations of
customers.
Howard and David worked
in the second Efros store in
New Orleans Mall,
Southfield, which opened
1959 . . . Then came West
Bloomfield Orchard Mall in
1973 . . . Son Barry joined the
gang and in 1979 when the
Farmington Hills Muirwood
Square pharmacy was
opened.
Another son of Jerry and
wife Ada is Arthur, who also
knows his medicine . . . but as
a physician.
Jerry and his four sons are
all graduates of Wayne State.
JUST CAN'T understand
why some people write me
comments and don't give any
identification . . . What a
waste of time . . . They must
know it's very fast food for the
waste basket.
"I NEVER play golf," says
Joan Rivers. "I have more im-
portant things to lie about."
. . . "You've got to handle liars
with understanding," says
Joan, "and learn to read bet-
ween the lyings. For instance,
if a guy tells you he dabbles
in oil, he's a gas station atten-
dant. If a woman says her
husband is a brain, liver and
kidney specialist, he's a but-
cher. If someone says, 'I'm
really clicking big around
town,' he means his dentures
don't fit.' " ❑
