essence of good music,
Kovalsky says. Forget get-
ting all the notes right for
now. Concentrate instead on
the sound.
, Although he readily ad-
mits he can't bear it when
pianists bang their notes,
Koval§ky offers no other
words of criticism for his
fellow musicians' style. "To
be generous," he says, "is
part of the real artist.
"Everyone does according
to his abilities. Some are
able to touch the stars, like
(the late Vladimir) Horowitz.
But no one is better than the
other; they all have different
styles.
"To say 'Do you like
Horowitz or (Arthur)
Rubinstein better?' is like
asking, 'Which is better, rice
or potatoes? You don't like
rice, so you don't like it, but
don't reject it." ❑
