to marry outweighs the pres-
sure to marry wisely.
From her talks with hun-
dreds of intermarried couples,
Rabbi • Cowan said she be-
lieves the divorce rate is
higher for intermarried Jew-
ish women because the bur-
den of raising the children
Jewishly tends to fall on the
mother, whether or not she is
Jewish. If she is not Jewish,
her Jewish husband will like-
ly be a partner in the effort.
If she is Jewish, however,
"that leaves the Jewish
woman much more alone with
the task," Cowan said.
The non-Jewish husband
doesn't usually participate in
the Jewish upbringing of the
children and may even resent
it. If the woman becomes
more Jewish through the pro-
cess of instilling a Jewish
identity in her kids, she may
become more alienated from
her husband, Cowan said.
The findings on the negligi-
ble effect of Jewish education
on the chances of intermarry-
ing also will undoubtedly
raise hackles. The researchers
assume that when they are
able to differentiate between
different kinds of Jewish
education in next year's na-
tional Jewish population
study — the first update in 20
years — they will find that a
more intensive Jewish educa-
tion — such as day school —
does correlate negatively with
intermarriage.
The current data shows
that the kind of Jewish
education the average
American Jew gets —
Hebrew or Sunday school un-
til bar/bat mitzvah — doesn't
by itself diminish one's
chances of intermarrying.
At least one Jewish educa-
tion official isn't surprised.
"Jewish education confined to
a four-walled classroom two
to four hours a week by itself
shouldn't be expected to ac-
complish much," said Eliot
Spack, executive director of
the national Coalition for the
Advancement of Jewish Edu-
cation. "Religious school
before bar mitzvah is an in-
troduction; it's low level
cognitive information.
"A number of us in the field
today are trying to get people
to recognize that Jewish edu-
cation is a multi-dimensional
intervention system that in-
cludes camps, youth move-
ments and other informal ef-
forts."
Spack pointed out that
unlike a generation ago, Jew-
ish schools are often left to be
the sole resource for Jewish
infusion and that very often
the values and knowledge
taught in the schools are not
complemented by the home
environment.
"There are a lot of positive
things happening in Jewish
education to stem the tide of
