BACKGROUND: Eric Lipson grew up in
Detroit in the Livernois and Eight Mile
area. "I was glad to grow up in an
integrated neighborhood in Detroit. It
affected my outlook, and I believe I have
greater empathy for the civil rights
struggle," says Lipson.
When he was in the sixth grade, the
family moved to Huntington Woods. He
celebrated his bar mitzvah at Temple
Emanu-El. After his bar mitzvah,
Lipson began working.
Lipson's first job was a paper route.
He then helped in the family business,
Athens Coney Island on Woodward Ave.
"Learning how to work i is really
important," adds Lipson.
In 1967, he was graduated from
Berkley High School. He attended
Oakland University, receiving his BA
degree. He then took a year off to make
a film about the Agree Outpost Camp
in upper Ontario.
Lipson adores the beautiful country
at Agree and the dynamic program. "It
was a film begging to be made," he says.
Lipson believes the camp still uses the
1971 film for promotional purposes.
After completing the film, he
attended the University of Michigan
Law School. After receiving his law
degree, he worked for the Student Legal
Services in Ann Arbor for four years.
In 1978, he decided to write a
handbook for middle school children on
law with his mother Greta Lipson. His
mother has published several books for
teachers and students. "I wanted to
demystify the law for kids," he says.
After completing the book, the Fresh
Air Society needed an outdoor education
director. Lipson's ongoing relationship
with Camp Tamarack began when he
was a camper in the mid-1960s. With
his love of nature, this was a perfect
interim job. "Of all the institutions I
have attended, Camp Tamarack has had
more influence on me than any other."
Throughout the years, he also
dabbled with carpentry. He is the holder
of a patent for a geodesic dome of
prefabricated vertical panels that can
easily be assembled for shelter. The
geometry of the structure provides
extraordinary strength for housing.
Since each unit is made of 10 identical
wall panels and 10 identical roof panels,
they are called Deca Domes. He
collaborated with Fredrick Golden on
this project.
Deca Domes will be test marketed
for children's playhouses and there has
been interest from companies as far
away as the Soviet Union in using Deca
