LA MIRAGE MALL, 29555 NORTHWESTERN HWY. Bet. 12 Mile LT Inkster

Restaurant which didn't
make it either despite its
elegant decor?
"A new show was starting
at the CLub Three 666's
downtown. The show was call-
ed, 'The West Indian Dippy-
Dip Review' starring the
Calypso Kids.
"Summer's at the sign of
the windmill on Lafayette
and Shelby was advertising a
daily supper of roast young
turkey, dressing, cranberry
sauce, potatoes, roll and but-
ter for 34 cents. The
restaurant was even
air-conditioned.
"Latin music was the craze
and the Book Casino's
Copacabana Review was
pleasing patrons with the
Samba Sirens, Afro-Cuban
and Brazilian songs and folk
dances.
A 1940s Theatregoer from
the Shubert Lafayette
Theatre advertised three
Brass Rails at Twenty West
Adams, Michigan at Griswold
and 6545 Woodward. They
boasted the longest bars - in
Michigan with quality food,
the finest liquors and
entertainment.
"The Penobscot Club at the
Fort Street entrance of the
Penobsot Building downtown
was billed as the gay, new
restaurant in the city with
superb food and music by Don
King. Robert Lace was the
host.
"After the theatre, the play
bill ad said, the stage is Sam-
my Sofferin's Wonder Bar, on
Washington Blvd., at State,
famous coast-to-coast.
"I wonder what happened
to those good old seafood
places where you could stuff
yourself with shore dinners
from the sea plus fried
chicken and corn-on-the-cob?
"Many of us have fond
memories of Hedge's Wigwam
on Woodward, the Gold Cup
Room in the Whittier Hotel,
Club Royale where you could
gamble, the elegant Latin
Quarter and so many more.
And there still aren't many
ribberies that can beat the
spare ribs at the old Checker
Barbeque in Detroit.
"Who would have believed
the Scotch and Sirloin would
close its doors? Everything
from the shrimp Louis to the
sirloin steak to the Dover sole
was delicious. The place was
always jumping with lunch,
dinner and after-theater
crowds and those who stood
knee deep around the piano
bar listening to the songs of
Carl Steger, who knew most
