French Jews
Protest Visit
Paris (JTA) — Theo Klein,
head of CRIF, the body
representing organized
French Jewry, has given voice
to the outrage and frustration
felt by leaders of the French
Jewish community over their
government's attitude toward
them regarding the forthcom-
ing visit by Palestine Libera-
tion Organization chief Yassir
Arafat.
After the announcement of
the meeting between Arafat
and French President Fran-
cois Mitterrand, Jewish of
expected to hear some
explanation for the action
from Mitterrand's ad-
ministration. However, no at-
tempt was made to alleviate
the anger of the Jewish
community.
Klein wrote in a letter to
Mitterrand that French Jews
might have been more
understanding, had the presi-
dent obtained:
• PLO recognition of the
rights of the Jewish people to
Israel;
• A condemnation of the
U.N. resolution equating
Zionism with racism;
• And a total halt of the
violence and support for free
elections "in the territories
occupied till 1967 by Jordan
and Egypt."
Addressing his French co-
religionists, Klein asked
every Jewish organization to
show its dismay publicly, ad-
ding that he wanted French
diplomacy to be more balanc-
ed and useful, expressing
itself with clarity and
measure, and stop being dead
set against the only
democracy of the Middle
East."
A date for the meeting bet-
ween Mitterrand and Arafat,
officially confirmed two
weeks ago, has not yet been
announced.
Judge Rules
Against Kach
Los Angeles (JTA) — A Los
Angeles Superior Court judge
has upheld the right of the
Jewish Federation Council to
exclude the local Kach
chapter from official par-
ticipation in two community
festivals.
In its suit, Kach Interna-
tional argued that its exclu-
sion from the Exodus '89
festival held April 9 in the
San Fernando Valley and the
Los Angeles Jewish Festival
scheduled for June 4 violated
the group's right to freedom of
speech and religion.
