countered that Kach, led by
the militantly right-wing
Rabbi Meir Kahane in Israel,
was "a racist organization
that endorses violence and
programs and practices
repugnant to the federation!'
In her ruling, Judge
Miriam Vogel said that the
federation could exclude
whomever it wished, adding
that "I do not believe that
when an umbrella group has
a festival for one day that it
is required . . under any
amendment to the Constitu-
tion to make space available
for any group with which it
disagrees?'
Barry Fisher, the Kach at-
torney, said that he was filing
an extraordinary writ asking
the Court of Appeals to over-
turn Vogel's decision. He said
that "the Los Angeles Jewish
community is a dynamic tur-
moil of ideas. It's our
strength. We're a crazy quilt
. . . Liberals, gays and others
included by today's 'pro-
gressive' JFC leadership may
be excluded by those of a dif-
ferent philosophy tomorrow!'
Attorney David Carson,
representing the federation,
said that no one was denying
Kach's right of free speech.
"Kach members," he said,
"can attend (the festivals),
they can distribute leaflets,
they can try to persuade in-
dividuals of their point of
view . . . but the federation
has no obligation to provide a
forum for Kach or make it
part of the official program!"

Dustin Hoffman earned a
rare standing ovation from
the 6,500 spectators in the
Shrine Auditorium as he ac-
cepted the best actor award
for his portrayal of an autistic
savant in Rain Man.
Director Barry Levinson, as
expected, received his Oscar
for Rain Man, and the picture
itself was named best film of
the year.
A highly popular award,
judging by audience applause,
went to Hotel Terminus: The
Life and Times of Klaus Bar-
bie, a shattering documentary
on Nazi war crimes and
French collaboration.
Marcel Ophuls, the pro-
ducer and director, thanked
his two home countries,
France and the United States,
