Oriental to Australian, South
American to British. The
children asked the Four Ques-
tions, searched for the hidden
matzah, opened the door for
Elijah and sang the tradi-
tional songs. We had our own
United Nations celebrating a
holiday of religious freedom —
everyone delighted to partake
of the food and tradition, the
holiday joy and remembrance
of past holidays with loved
ones.
So many present com-
mented on how pleased their
relatives were to know that
they would be participating
in a seder so far from home.
Since then, we have gathered
together for Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur services at
other homes. A former
yeshiva student chanted Kol
Niche; another conducted ser-
vices and a family built a
Sukkah, helped by other
families. A Chanukah party
saw 50 of us gather and light
the candles, hold a children's
gift exchange, play the dreidel
game and eat latkes and sour
cream, apples sauce and
cheese blintzes and chopped
liver — such wonderful
Jewish food.
Seder this year will be
another incredible event. The
list is getting longer; the
French Jews who came to
High Holiday services, as well
as the Black Jew from
Chicago, want to be included.
This year, there will even be
baked goods. Tucked away in
my suitcases when I returned
from home leave last summer
were boxes of Passover cake
mixes which are now hidden
in the freezer.
Passover 1989 will be
another very special occasion
for the Jews in Indonesia. 0
Carol Cherkasky and her hus-
band, Milton, are former
members of Temple Kol Ami in
West Bloomfield. Since
September, 1987, they have liv-
ed in Jakarta, where Milton is
employed by an Indonesian firm
and Carol teaches at Jakarta In-
ternational School.
