Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle
is always a lively one
In turn, Ridley thinks that
Baum is pretty lively himself.
"A lot of us grew up watching
cartoons for our entertain-
ment," said Ridley, owner and
operator of Mark Ridley's
Comedy Castle. "Part of the
reason Bruce Baum is so suc-
cessful in comedy is that wat-
ching him perform is like see-
ing a human cartoon. He has
that inside-out look at life.
That is, he looks at life by
twisting things around."
Baum's family never
discouraged him from pursu-
ing a career in comedy. "My
family was very supportive
when I told them I wanted to
become a comedian," said
Baum. "As long as I finished
my college education, they
agreed. Having my parents,
my wife, Lynn, and my two
children, Jenna and Dylan,
behind me has been a great
help to me
Baum, who was raised in a
Conservative Jewish home,
said that his favorite subject
to joke about is animals. "If
you had to dissect my act, you
might find a lot of jokes about
animals," noted Baum. "You
don't offend anyone with
animal jokes. As long as you
are not killing the animals,
then I guess it's okay to make
fun of them."
And who is his favorite com-
edian? He likes George
Carlin, Charlie Chaplin,
Buster Keaton, and a certain
silly rabbit. "I look up to
Bugs Bunny more than
anyone else," noted Baum.
Unlike many comedians,
Baum chooses not to include
racial, political or profane
material in his act."I try to do
a show that I would want to
see," said Baum. "I sit down
and write at least an hour a
day; it's part of the discipline
that I - learned in Hebrew
school."
