BACKGROUND: Mireille Elgazar Plotke
was born in Egypt. Her father, Joseph,
was a jeweler, and her mother, Angel,
was a homemaker. "My parents felt
there was no future there," recalls
Plotke. When she was seven years old,
the family moved to Paris.
In Paris, her family lived in the
Nuevieme section near her aunt and
uncle. Her father continued His
profession as a jeweler. Plotke
remembers being interested in fashion
and art as a youngster in Paris. Her
parents arranged for her to have a
private tutor in fashion design. "She
taught me what no school could teach
me?'
In 1963, her father had glaucoma,
and the family heard that the medical
care here was superior. The family
decided to move again, and they settled
in Chicago. Plotke had no trouble
learning the English language, since
she already spoke Arabic and French.
Plotke attended Roosevelt University
in Chicago. At age 20, she met her
husband at a dance. They married the
following year. "When I got married, I
put my career aside," says Plotke. She
and her husband moved to Detroit
where he became employed at the
McCord Co.
- After raising her children in
Southfield, she worked at Roz and
Sherm and Sandilar in the area. In her
free time, she began to design clothes.
When Plotke developed a clothing line,
she hired some sales representatives. "A
few people encouraged me to open my
own store."
In September 1988, Mireille opened
her boutique in downtown Franklin. She
sells separates that can easily be
interchanged. Her spring collection
includes washable coordinates in silk,
polished cotton, linen and Spandex in
bright, bold colors.
Plotke is content with her career
and glad her parents moved the family
to the United States. "I really
appreciate this country. We live in the
land of opportunity."
TIDBITS
NETWORKING
The Jewish Welfare Federation's Business
and Professional Women's division took a
new approach to networking during a
recent dinner featuring noted art lecturer
Hope Palmer at the Somerset Inn in
Troy.
Pennies were placed under one water
glass at each table. And the women
sitting in the selected spots were able to
introduce themselves and do a little self
promotion of sorts.
