Israel Trip Has Seats
Available JCCouncil

RICHARD PEARL

Staff Writer

S

ome seats are still
available for the De-
troit Jewish Com-
munity Council's Solidarity
Trip to Israel March 2-9, ac-
cording to David Gad-Harf,
Council executive director.
Almost 80 Detroiters have
signed up for the $999-per-
person trip, "but we have
room for more," said Gad-
Harf, adding that the
deadline for all payments is
Wednesday, Feb. 8.
The special roundtrip,
double-occupancy rate is from
Detroit Metro Airport and of-
fers three days in Jerusalem,
one day in the Galilee and
two days in Tel Aviv, with five-
star hotel accommodations
and most meals. Gad-Harf
said that at least 78 people
had registered as of Monday.
The purpose of the trip is to
show solidarity with Israel,
which has experienced a
sharp reduction in American
tourism. Tourism is the
Jewish state's No. 2 industry.
Gad-Harf and Council
President Paul D. Borman
met Tuesday with David
Shein, El Al Airlines general

manager and vice-president
of the airline's North and
Central America divisions,
and with Elhanan Dvir, presi-
dent of Kenes Tours of Tel
Aviv, the tour organizer.
"We were told tourism to
Israel is down 30 percent,"
related Gad-Harf. "We were
commended for what we are
doing but urged to do more.
We'd like to, but we are uni-
que in that we have reached
out to our constituent groups
to urge them to organize their
own tours after sending
members on this one."
Gad-Harf said El Al's Shein
discussed the trip's security,
stating that El Al will employ
its security measures beginn-
ing with the first leg of the
trip from Metro Airport.
El Al, known worldwide for
its effective airport security,
will send one or two represen-
tatives to Detroit to load and
seal the tour passengers' lug-
gage into one container. The
container will be transferred
in New York to El Al and will
not be opened again until the
tour reaches Israel, Gad-Harf
said.
An informational meeting
for those taking the tour is
scheduled for Tuesday, Feb.
14, he said.
