FRIDAY, JULY. 29, 1988

Republican JoAnn Soronen or
Republican Donn Wolf.
"I believe my years of ex-
perience in local, state and
federal government will be
tremendous help in finding
solutions to our county and
area problems," Wolf said.

aul J. Fischer, the
only Jewish candidate
running for one of two
new Second District seats on
the Michigan Court of Ap-
peals, views the judicial post
as "the ultimate job for
dispensing justice."
Fischer, 30, says he has
tried more than 300 appeals
during his five years as an
Oakland County assistant
prosecuting attorney. And
now, Fischer says, he is ready
to move forward to the more
intellectually stimulating
career.
On Tuesday, he will face 12
other candidates in the
15-county non-partisan
primary race for Court of Ap-
peals. Four of the candidates
will secure ballot spots for the
November election, when two
judges will be elected to
$96,000-a-year posts.
The district includes
Oakland, Macomb, Ogemaw,
Arenac, Gladwin, Midland,
Bay, Huron, Tuscola, Sanilac,
Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair,
Shiawassee and Ingham
counties.
The two court openings
follow a decision by the
Legislature to created six new
positions in three appellate
districts. It expanded the
court to ease caseloads for
judges in the state's second-
ranking court. Appeals judges
review cases from the lower
courts and make ad-
ministrative agency decisions
over such issues as worker's
compensation and public
utility rates.
Michigan Court of Appeals
Judge Martin M. Doctoroff,
who also is Jewish, is running
unopposed in the Second
District to fill a vacancy.
Fischer faces Dean David
Alan, J. Martin Brennan,
Paul A. Cassidy, Mark J.
Cavanagh, Patrick Cleary, E.
Thomas Fitzgerald, Kathleen
Jensen, Marilyn Kelly, M.
Richard Knoblock, Richard
Kuhn, Ellen E. Mason and
former state Sen. David M.
Serotkin.
For Oakland County Pro-
bate Court, voters will be ask-
ed to select from Huntington
Woods attorney David Kauf-

Paul Fischer

man, Troy attorney Thomas
Brennan, senior assistant
Michigan attorney general
James Delaney, Oakland
County manager of probate
and mental court division
Hugh Dean, or attorney Joan
Young.
Circuit Court Judges Alice
Gilbert, David Breck and
Francis X. O'Brian are up for
re-election for six-year terms.
Vying for one open spot on the
Circuit Court are Robert
Houston and Bloomfield
District Judge Edward
Sosnick.
In the Southfield and
Bloomfield district courts, in-
cumbents Susan Moiseev,
Bryan Levy and Gus Cifelli
are unopposed.

Conservative
Rabbis Ordained

Jerusalem (JTA) — The first
four Israelis to become Con-
servative rabbis were ordain-
ed Tuesday at ceremonies on
Mount Scopus.
The occasion was the
highlight of a week of solem-
nities and festivities surroun-
ding the meetings in
Jerusalem of the principal in-
stitutions of the worldwide
Conservative movement.
The Israeli government was
represented at the ordination
by Education Minister Yitz-
hak Navon, a former presi-
dent of Israel.
