Market, to the hospital's Rab-
bi Leonard Pearlstein and to
the home of I.W. Winston,
Sinai's attorney for
Nerenberg's lawsuit.
The indictment also
charges the duo with driving
cars into Winston's garage,
throwing rocks through his
windows and sending him a
dead fish in the mail.
If convicted, the two men
face up to 20 years in prison
and $250,000 fines.
Tensions between Rabbi
Nerenberg and Sinai Hospital
began two years ago when the
rabbi, who had purchased the
now defunct Lincoln Kosher
Meats, asked Sinai officials
for its kosher meat contract.
Since his butcher shop closed,
the rabbi has worked as a
substitute teacher for Detroit
Public Schools.
When he failed to secure
the contract, Rabbi ,
Nerenberg filed a $1.5 million
lawsuit against the hospital
and the overseeing rabbis.
Also named in the suit was
the Council of Orthodox Rab-
bis, which settled a year ago
for $5,000.
"We deplore any violence or
any threats against any
witness in any trial," said
Steve Cohen, the Council of
Orthodox Rabbi's attorney.
"However, we are also sadden-
ed by the arrest of any Jew on
any charge. We do not know
if he is guilty and it is not for
us to judge. If he is found guil-
ty, he should be punished like
anyone else. These are horri-

Concurrent with the Masor-
ti movement meeting, the
Rabbinical Assembly, the rab-
binical branch of Conser-
vative Judaism in the United
States, is holding its 88th an-
nual conference in
Jerusalem.
It overwhelmingly adopted
a resolution Tuesday calling
on the Knesset to abolish the
office of chief rabbi. Doing so
would eliminate exclusive Or-
thodox control over the
religious courts, religious
councils, educational pro-
grams and almost every
aspect of family life in Israel.
The resolution, drafted by
representatives of the 130
Conservative rabbis practic-
ing in Israel, noted that "the
Chief Rabbinate is not based
on Jewish tradition."
