out a coaching career. "I like
working with kids in summer
camp, but I'm not sure what
level I'd be best at — high
school, college or the pros.
Who knows where it will
lead?"
"I don't have any definite
goals," he concludes. "Just to
make it in the NBA was a
reward in itself." ❑

jumping better, too," he em-
phasizes. "This is because I
work all year around on my
conditioning. Professoinal
athletics is no longer a case of
not picking up a ball until the
pre-season starts.
"I train all summer long,
building my strength and
speed, play in summer
leagues, lecture at camps. I
also have time to visit my
folks and travel. The players
today are all so big and strong
you have to keep ahead" by
year-round workouts.
An academic All-American
at Syracuse with a 3.4 grade-
point average, the chemistry
major received a $2,000 post-
graduate scholarship from
the National Collegiate
Athletic Association.
Schayes has an outgoing
personality and makes many
appearances for the Nuggets.
Last season, he even worked
as the team's color radio an-
nouncer during a game he sat
out with an injury.
Like his father, Dan does
not play on Yom Kippur, but
since that is so early in the
season, the media hardly
notice.
After growing up in the
east, Schayes enjoys the
western lifestyle, although
there are fewer endorsement
opportunities.
"I don't find time to do com-
mercials during the season,
although I've done them for a
car dealer and car stereos," he
says. "I've also done some
volunteer work at the Jewish
Community Center and for
the Anti-Defamation League
of B'nai B'rith."
He also appreciates the cur-
rent edition of the Nuggets,
who are battling Dallas for
first place in the Midwest
Division. "We have a great
bunch of nice, hard-working
guys on the Nuggets. And
Doug Moe, our coach, is great
to play for. As for the future,
right now I'm very wrapped
up in what I'm doing. It's
hard to imagine when the end
(of my career) will come."
