PHILOSOPHY: "Expose a child to foreign
languages and to a foreign culture in a
positive way at an early age, and it
becomes a special part of him, broadens
his outlook and changes him for the
better. No one can ever take his
increased knowledge and insight away.
Also commitment and persistence can
accomplish miracles!"

BACKGROUND: Evelyn Fleischer Prince
was born and raised in Shaw, Miss., a
rural town of 2,000. Her parents, Julius
and Goldie Fleischer own a small, dry
goods store in Shaw and still live there.
She and her parents attended a
synagogue 12 miles away that served as
the Jewish community for the
neighboring towns. Prince was the
valedictorian of Shaw High School and
the football queen. She was also the
president of her temple youth group.
"When you live in a small town, you
are part of everything," says Prince. In
college, she majored in music. In her
junior year she attended the Sorbonne
in Paris, which changed her life. "It
showed me about people and cultures. I
understood that everybody doesn't think
the way we do. It added a dimension to
my personality." She then decided to
attend graduate school at Tufts and
major in French. After she married and
moved to Connecticut, she taught
French. In 1975, the Princes hosted a
French student in their home. After
enjoying this experience, they decided to
coordinate the Nacel Cultural
Exchanges in Connecticut. Nacel is an
organization that promotes
international understanding with
foreign exchange students. In 1978, Gov.
Ella Grasso issued a proclamation to
the Princes praising the program and
their efforts. When the family moved to
Michigan, they started the program
here. They have served over 1,400 past
participants, including many Jewish
families. This year they have already
received over 150 applications. They are
also seeking 300 host families. Both of
their children have participated in the
program. Mark will live with a French
family in the Ivory Coast this summer.
"My children still talk bout the friends
they have made." She then quotes Ralph
Waldo Emerson: "The only way to have
a friend is to be one."
