As he celebrates the 40th
anniversary of his Spitzer's
Hebrew Book and Gift
Center, Joseph Spitzer has
kept pace with the movement
out of Detroit to the suburbs
of the Jewish community.
Beginning at Dexter and
Cortland in 1947, Spitzer has
had locations at Wyoming
and Curtis, Coolidge and Ten
Mile and currently is at the
Harvard Row mall in
Southfield.
A native of Czechoslovakia
and a Holocaust survivor,
Spitzer came to the U.S. in
1946 and married his wife,
Helena, in 1947. His wife
helps part-time in the store,
waiting on customers and do-
ing some bookkeeping.
Nephew Avrohom Plotnik is
his partner.Bookkeeper Ella
Dzialowski has been with him
for more than 20 years.
The father of six and grand-
father of "many," "Mr.
