Unlike Adwe, all of the prod-
ucts put out by Shabat, a ko-
sher cosmetic company based
in Brooklyn, N.Y., are in the
form of a fine powder which is
permissible to wear on Shabbat
and holidays.
Shabat offers kosher face
powder, blush and eye powder.
"Because it is a powder, it only
sits on the surface of the face; it
never sticks to the body itself,"
says Rabbi Avrohom Bloomen-
crantz, who certifies Shabat
products. "Take, for example, the
purple eye shadow. It can be
compared to putting a purple
mask on the face. Since it does
not become part of the face,
there is no law against it."

As for purity, "you
could put our hand
cream on your
bread and eat it,"
says Alfred Wesel
of Adwe.

Company founder is Caroline
Schloss, who got the idea for
Shabat while she worked at
Kline's Pharmacy in Brooklyn,
N.Y. After listening to many re-
quests for cosmetics that could
be worn on Shabbat, in 1985
she located a large factory to
manufacture the powders for
her, and formed Shabat.
"It took a year to find this fac-
tory," says Schloss. "Some com-
panies used too much oil and
the product was too dark or
stayed on too long."
Schloss buys the loose pow-
der in bulk, not pressed, form.
In the evenings, she fills the
containers herself. "Sometimes,
my kids or my husband help
me if they're in a good mood.
