Unlike Adwe, all of the prod- ucts put out by Shabat, a ko- sher cosmetic company based in Brooklyn, N.Y., are in the form of a fine powder which is permissible to wear on Shabbat and holidays. Shabat offers kosher face powder, blush and eye powder. "Because it is a powder, it only sits on the surface of the face; it never sticks to the body itself," says Rabbi Avrohom Bloomen- crantz, who certifies Shabat products. Company founder is Caroline Schloss, who got the idea for Shabat while she worked at Kline's Pharmacy in Brooklyn, N.Y. After listening to many re- quests for cosmetics that could be worn on Shabbat, in 1985 she located a large factory to manufacture the powders for her, and formed Shabat. "It took a year to find this fac- tory," says Schloss. "Some com- panies used too much oil and the product was too dark or stayed on too long." Schloss buys the loose pow- der in bulk, not pressed, form. In the evenings, she fills the containers herself.
