VSCATERING TO GO!

sion. But having played all
over America, that is where I
chose."
Divorced and the father of
four children (two of his own
and two adopted), Marceau
spends his time on tour,
teaching, painting and
writing books. His most re-
cent book, Pimporello, will be
released this fall. It is the
story of an Italian street
mime with illustrations by
Marceau. "It is the story of
dreams and reality, life and
death."
Two years ago, while perfor-
ming in Moscow, Marceau col-
lapsed on stage and under-
went emergency surgery for a-
hemorrhaging ulcer, forcing
him to take a year off.
Though now he is back in full
force, claiming the surgery
made a better mime out of
him, he admits, "I'm more
aware of the fragility of life. I
want to cultivate it, like you
cultivate flowers, within
elegance and deep concern for
beauty."
For a mime, Marcel
Marceau has a lot to say.
Ironically, his favorite part
of being Marcel Marceau is:
"To just shut up — to be able
to communicate with all peo-
ple without saying a word.
Because when you say words
it brings compromise. But
when you shut up, everybody
understands you suddenly.
You say nothing, and
everybody agrees with you.
Words bring understanding
but they also bring separa-
tion. Words lie also. With
gestures, I never lied to
anyone."
When Marceau finally
brings the conversation to an
end, he grins ear to ear.
"You see, when a mime
starts to speak, nothing can
make him stop." ❑
