in its hey-day, and there was
just no work."
The father of a friend own-
ed a monument shop, and
Goldman went to work for
him selling headstones. One
night his boss called and said
he was swamped in the
funeral home and pleaded for
his assistance. "No way,"
Goldman protested. "But he
convinced me to come down
and help, and it didn't bother
me nearly as much as I
thought it would."
Goldman went back to
school and received a funeral
director's license. He is not a
mortician (embalmer). "I
worked in St. Paul for several
years. But after a while it
really started to get to me
because the Jewish popula-
tion in St. Paul is very small,
and every time the phone
rang it was someone I knew
or a parent of someone I
knew."
Leaving the funeral
business temporarily,
Goldman worked as a
manager of Government
Employee Marts, and GEM
eventually transferred
Goldman to one of their
Detroit stores in the early
60s. Shortly after, he attend-
ed a funeral at Kaufman's.
He showed an interest in
their building and was soon
offered a full-time position.
At one time Goldman says
he was making nearly as
much in the craft business as
in his day job. "This was go-
ing to be my retirement in-
come," he says, "but now that
we're in the apartment, I've
backed off from those plans."
Some of Goldman's more
complex pieces, the Queen
Anne highboy with its tiny
drawers and hinges and a
replica of an antique piano,
he made as experiments to
see how long they would take
and how much he could
charge. "I realized that many
of them wouldn't be pro-
fitable because I couldn't
charge enough for them."
The costliest item Goldman
ever sold was a harp, which
cost $100. For strings he
chose the finest threads used
in doily tatting.

After his research, it took

Goldman 15 hours to con-
struct the small antique
piano. "If I were to make
them in production, it
naturally wouldn't take so
long, but I'm really not in-
terested in that anymore. I
prefer to work on individual
things."
"If I could have the ideal
job, I think I would like to
restore antiques," Goldman
says. "I've never tried pain-
ting. Maybe I'll be like Chur-
chill and take up painting
when I'm 80." CI
