FRIDAY, JULY 3, 1987

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

here's a new look now
at Chuck Muer's Dig-
gers Restaurant on
Grand River . . . seating
almost 200 at booths and
tables . . . with its remodeled
ambiance . . . The fresh at-
mosphere of Diggers is back
. . . but more important, so is
the good food many folks
remember.
In the fine tradition of
Chuck Muer surrounding
himself with key personnel,
he has general manager Mike
Haddad at Diggers, which
always was one of Chuck's
good ones for seafood . . . from
Clamdiggers to shortened
Diggers.
Bob Christian is at the
piano 5 to 9 Mondays through
Thursdays . . . and till 9:30
Fridays and Saturdays . . . On
Monday and Thursday, he is
joined by a bass . . . Bob does
a fine job on the keyboard,
tickling tunes that are
favorites of so many.
We had dinner at Diggers
recently and were impressed
with the change . . .
Customers nibble on matzah
with lobster pate before order-
ing or while waiting for their
selections . . . and the bright,
airy look retains its at-
mosphere of intimacy.
Very conscientious and per-
sonable waitress Chris Bren-
nan brought me a cup of cold
gazpacho soup as it should be
made . . . full bodied . . . load-
ed with hunks of fresh
vegetables, not "pureed" .. .
And the seafood pasta
pagliara is a big winner .. .
with fresh salmon, shrimps,
scallops and mussels in a
- light sauce of fresh garlic and
herbs . . . served on a bed of
homemade linguine noodles.
One of the favorite dishes
there is lake trout en pap-
pilote . . . fresh Lake Superior
trout poached with fresh
vegetables, herbs and wine
. . . and baked in parchment
paper . . . Also the Diggers
seafood platter . . . with
Maryland crabcakes, shrimp
orly, oyster imperial and fresh
chargrilled fish of the day.
Fish at Diggers is prepared
broiled, chargrilled, poached
or blackened (Cajun style) .. .
and served with homemade
tartar or Bearnaise sauce, hot
homemade bread and choice
of Martha's Vineyards salad,
tossed salad or cole slaw, red-
skin potatoes and fresh
vegetables.
There are four appetizers,

minimum of 12 fresh seafood
catches, 16 entrees that also
include herbal chicken, house
sirloin, 9 oz. filet, lobster fet-
tucini verde, white or red
clam linguine, seafood fet-
tucine Alfredo, etc. .. .
Another big favorite is the
Maryland crab cakes, tangy
Maryland crabmeat broiled
and served with homemade
ruie sauce, rice pilaf and
vegetable embellishment.
Diggers is open for lunch
Monday through Sunday,
11:30 to 4 p.m. . . . dinner
Monday through Thursday, 4
p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday
and Saturday, 4 p.m. to 11
p.m. . . . Sunday, 4 p.m. to 9
pm. . . . There's also a "Hap-
py Hour" session now Mon-
day through Friday, 4 p.m. to
6 p.m.
The new Diggers is a
rediscovery.
Speaking of key men sur-
rounding Chuck Muer, can't
think of too many more profi-
cient and loyal than Ron Hoff-
man, his manager of
marketing services . . . Ron is
married (four months and two
weeks) to Diane Hofsess,
former "Yours Truly" colum-
nist and now a fine feature
writer at Detroit News .. .
He's been with Chuck almost
nine years . . . and a big "On
The Ball" gleam in Chuck
Muer's blue eyes.

LIMOUSINES LINED
THE STREET as the clock
struck eight and that long
talked-about five-year Cheeks
Reunion at Isis Entertain-
ment Center in Pontiac was
about to become reality.
Last-minute details in
place, Isis owner Gary Fried,
current Cheeks co-owner Bob
Jacobs and the gal who pull-
ed it all together, Mary
Krasman, Isis PR director,
manned the doors to welcome
what seemed like a "who's
who" of Detroit personalities.
Mary writes . . . "All deck-
ed out in their best 'baubles
and beads' were socialite
Marilyn Pollack, prominent
attorney Jeffrey Schaefer, par-
ty planner extraordinaire
Alan Stotsky, model Gina
Dell and a bevy of other
notables. Guests were greeted
with complimentary cham-
pagne, fresh shrimp, an array
of pates, fresh fruit and
vegetables and a total assort-
ment of crackers and cheeses.
"As the crowd continued to
pile in, the reunion began.
Familiar faces popped up on
the dance floor and even Gary
Korel took a night off from
`Monroes' to regain his throne
as the official d.j. of Cheeks.
