Michigan Resident
To Take To Heavens
A Traverse City resident has
been selected one of NASA's 15
new astronauts to join the space
program- since the Challenger
disaster in January, 1986. Lt.
Cmdr. Bruce Melnick, 37, a
native New Yorker and a
Catholic, was chosen to be a
mission specialist responsible
for ensuring safety to rocket
and crew on launch and entry.
In addition, Melnick will also
explore the skies from outside
the aircraft. "I am still on cloud
nine," he said of his recent ap-
pointment.
Of Polish descent, Melnick
was a helicopter pilot in the
Coast Guard for the past 14
years. He has been stationed in
Cape Cod, Sitka, Alaska, and
most recently, Traverse City.
The only downside of his new
job, Melnick said, is having to
leave Michigan.
