Hospital Friends To Have Luncheon Judith Shamian, director of nursing research at Toronto's Sunnybrook Medical Center, will be the guest speaker at the sixth annual scholarship luncheon of the Detroit Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital, noon July 8 in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Arnold Zuroff, 31455 Franklin Fair- way in Farmington Hills. Shamian received her reg- istered nurse diploma from Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem in 1971. She also was graduated from the Tel Aviv University and is a doc- toral candidate (nursing) at Case-Western Reserve Uni- versity, Cleveland, Ohio. Since coming to Canada 12 years ago she was assistant professor, school of nursing, University of Toronto; and lecturer, faculty of medicine, school of nursing, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec. At the luncheon the Detroit Friends hope to complete their three-year project to provide scholarships for the 23 students of the 1988 graduating class. Lt. Cmdr. Bruce Melnick, 37, a native New Yorker and a Catholic, was chosen to be a mission specialist responsible for ensuring safety to rocket and crew on launch and entry. In addition, Melnick will also explore the skies from outside the aircraft. "I am still on cloud nine," he said of his recent ap- pointment. Of Polish descent, Melnick was a helicopter pilot in the Coast Guard for the past 14 years. He has been stationed in Cape Cod, Sitka, Alaska, and most recently, Traverse City. The only downside of his new job, Melnick said, is having to leave Michigan.
