THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

DANNY RASKIN

NOTHING PRETEN-
TIOUS . . . a little brick

building with Venetian blinds
. . . in a shopping center on Or-
chard Lake Rd. just before Cass
Lake Rd.
But it's where people -could be
arrested . . . get a lawyer .. .
and judge . . . all at the same
time . . . They -all eat at Dave's
Deli . . . along with politicians,
doctors, etc. . . . March was
Irene and Dave Lebovic's 14th
year at this locale with Dave's
Deli becoming noted as a real
down-to-earth type
delicatessen-restaurant in a
sector that dotes on informal,
family-style eating and enjoys
the presence of this little
70-seater that once was a small
pizza operation.
It was Dr. Sid Burk's doings
that Dave and Irene came out
this way . . . They sold his
Dave's Bar & Deli east of the
Eastern Market downtown on
Sid's urging . . . and found the
spot everybody used to think
was so far out.
Irene and Dave had met in
Czechoslovakia over 40 years
ago and came here in 1955 .. .
He worked a short while at
Chrysler's . . . and then came
Boesky's on 12th and
Hazelwood, Modern on Fenkell,
Brother's at Northland and
Darby's on W. Seven Mile and
Wyoming.
Booths and tables, whirling
fans on the ceiling, many of the
help there since opening 14
years ago . . . a favorite place of
the late Irwin S. Cohn . . . over
ten breakfasts . . . 12 omelettes
. . . 20 sandwich combos . . . 36
regular sandwiches . . . 16 din-
ners plus specials . . . eight ap-
petizers . . . eight salads . . .
eight seafoods . . . eight soups
including choient . . . nine side
dishes . . . a dieter's menu of
seven dinner items . . . etc.
Dave is there at 4 a.m. . . .
although the place 'oesn't open
until 10 . . . and maybe he
"sleeps in" a little til about 4:30
or 5 a.m. if wife Irene closes .. .
Dave's Deli is open Monday-
Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and
Friday-Saturday til 10 . . . But
if people are there earlier, like
the cops for example among
others who need their morning
coffee, they know the doors will
,open.
Dave does all the cooking at
their deli . . . At home, Irene
does all the cooking . . . "He
doesn't mess in my kitchen and
I don't 'in his," says Irene .. .
But there's one thing she does
make at the place . . . and it's
a big favorite . . . her yummy
strawberry shortcake' with
fresh strawberries.
They've seen the area grow
throughout the years . . . and
watched children being carried
and growing up.
It's real European-style
homemade cooking .. . I had a
very tender piece of roast

,

chicken . . . and since Dave's
special the next day was going
to be paprikash, I also enjoyed
some of his homemade
dumplings.
Dave's Deli is also a hobby for
him . . . He loves to cook and
loves people.
You never know who is at
Dave's Deli . . . The fellow in
blue jeans sitting at the next
table or booth might be that
famous doctor you just read
about.
One thing for sure . . . the
folks who come to Dave's Deli
have a single thing in common
. . . good, wholesome, down-to-
earth home cooking in an in-
timate, friendly and informal
atmosphere.
That other fellow wearing
very casual sports clothes? .. .
Who knows? . . . He might own
Orchard Lake.

MICHIGAN CANCER
FOUNDATION'S fifth annual

dinner, held in the beautiful
Renaissance Ballroom of
Westin Hotel recently . . .
raised a quarter of a million
dollars . . . 20 percent more
than last year . . . in the aid for
cancer research, prevention and
patient programs.
Over 1,100 people were on
hand to support MCF, enjoy a
delicious dinner, the usual lob-
by open bars . . . and strains of
songstress Dionne Warwick
with her five regular in-
strumentalists among Johnny
Trudell's 21-piece band.
Gracious Gene and Marcia
Applebaum, general dinner co-
chairpersons, greeting people
as they got off the escalator .. .
Norman Allan in the kind of
ruffled tuxedo shirt I've been
looking for . . . Don't see Leslie
Colburn in years and then two
nights in row . . . Eleanor
Breitmeyer and husband Ar-
mand Gebert retiring from
Detroit News after a lot of years
. . . Shelley and Richard Golden
a beautiful couple . . . Mary
Lou Zieve (Mort's cutie wife) to
New York Monday and then to
Chicago Wednesday, but back
that evening for affair . . . She
is a products commercial
favorite . . . Linda Solomon on
stage co-hosting with Mort
Crim . . . absolutely stunning
in a long blue dress with red
styled bodice trim . . . No more
long hair . . . not short, but not
long . . . Hubby Barry wins out
. . . Mike Must with all you
want to know about yesteryears
and cheese . . . Wife Mary with
all you want to know about
Mike.
Linda Lutz (Eric) and Linda
Weissman (Dr. Martin) did
much tasting before selecting
the very choice menu for MCF
. and deserve a lot of kudos
for a grand job . . . Darlene and
Ben Tauber, honorary chairper-
sons, a lovely couple . . . Joe
Mikolajczyk, MCF pr gent, and
Wife Rebecca newlyweds as of

Friday before Wednesday night
affair.
On stage, Dave Hermelin,
chairman of the board of
trustees, remarking, "As Henry
the Eighth said to his wife, I
won't keep you long" . . . and
"Those who didn't make it to
my house last night, c'mon over
after the affair for dessert" .. .
Wonder what wife Doreen
would have done to Dave if the
people came? . . . Mort Crim
and Linda Solomon told to
"keep it going five minutes
more" while Dionne Warwick
got ready . . . Ben Tauber and
Dave Hermelin were already on
stage, ready to sing their duo
. . . which the audience would
have loved . . . Maxine
Ashcraft, MCF's vice prez of
development and community
relations, as usual a magnifi-
cent job.
About the night before at
Dave and Doreen Hermelin's
home for patrons, like evening
after it was biggest ever by
MCF . . . First one five years
ago had about 75 people .. .
This year, so many . . . over 300
. . . that three shuttle busses
took folks to and from Bingham
Office Plaza on Telegraph,
where they parked their cars
Dave and Doreen have a huge
home, but not for parking that
many cars . . . Giant 250-pound
chocolate truffle ball donated
by. Merchant of Vino's Ed Jon-
na, a real chocoholic's dream.
Gene Applebaum and Dave
Hermelin have been friends
almost all their lives . . .
kindergarten classmates at
Winterhalter School.
A large tent this time . . . buf-
fets set up outside and inside
. . . and kosher food seldom
tasted better.
REBECCA GOLDBAUM of
Falvey Toyota in Troy, one of his
best customers, tells of Brian
Papo becoming new owner of
recently opened Heavenly
Haven on Maple. Rd. (next to
E.G. Nick's carry-out) , . . The
take-out spot serves Steve's
Homemade Ice Cream, Haagen
Dazs Ice Cream and Colombo
Yogurt . . . in everything from
cones to shakes to sundaes, etc.
. . . Outside tables are expected
in a couple of weeks . . . It is
open seven days, 11 a.m. to 10
p.m.

GARY HARDWICK,

barrister-comedian, has been
added to the list of funsters in
"Mae's April Fool, An Evening
of Comedy & Variety" . . . this
Sunday, 8 p.m., at Jewish Com-
munity Center, Drake and
Maple . . . Others will include
Paul Stanley, magician-
comedian Jeff Hobson and Tim
Rollins, juggler-comedian . .
wine and cheese afterglow will
follow the funfest.
LITTLE BY LITTLE people
began coming in . . . and from
dinner time until show time it
became a packed house at BBC
