But it's where people -could be arrested . . . get a lawyer .. . and judge . . . all at the same time . . . They -all eat at Dave's Deli . . . along with politicians, doctors, etc. . . . March was Irene and Dave Lebovic's 14th year at this locale with Dave's Deli becoming noted as a real down-to-earth type delicatessen-restaurant in a sector that dotes on informal, family-style eating and enjoys the presence of this little 70-seater that once was a small pizza operation. It was Dr. Sid Burk's doings that Dave and Irene came out this way . . . They sold his Dave's Bar & Deli east of the Eastern Market downtown on Sid's urging . . . and found the spot everybody used to think was so far out. Irene and Dave had met in Czechoslovakia over 40 years ago and came here in 1955 .. . Dave's Deli is open Monday- Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday-Saturday til 10 . . . But if people are there earlier, like the cops for example among others who need their morning coffee, they know the doors will ,open. Dave does all the cooking at their deli . . . At home, Irene does all the cooking . . . "He doesn't mess in my kitchen and I don't 'in his," says Irene .. . But there's one thing she does make at the place . . . and it's a big favorite . . . her yummy strawberry shortcake' with fresh strawberries. They've seen the area grow throughout the years . . . and watched children being carried and growing up. It's real European-style homemade cooking .. . I had a very tender piece of roast , chicken . . . and since Dave's special the next day was going to be paprikash, I also enjoyed some of his homemade dumplings. Dave's Deli is also a hobby for him . . . He loves to cook and loves people. You never know who is at Dave's Deli . . . The fellow in blue jeans sitting at the next table or booth might be that famous doctor you just read about. One thing for sure . . . the folks who come to Dave's Deli have a single thing in common . . . good, wholesome, down-to- earth home cooking in an in- timate, friendly and informal atmosphere.
