week away and if the Gordis
issue is not resolved prior to
the convention, it is sure to
be played out there. In addi-
tion, the AJCommittee, once
seen as the class of national
Jewish organizations, has
had more than its share of
turnover in the last few
years. Don Feldstein, who re-
placed Gold, was asked to
leave only a year after he be-
came executive vice
president. Bill Trostin, who
served as acting executive
vice president, was passed
over in favor of Gordis.
One worried staffer sum-
med up the thoughts of many
at the AJCommittee when he
noted, "Five top execs in five
years won't say much for our
stability."
Local AJCommittee lead-
ers believe that Gordis' ter-
mination is inevitable. Miles
Jaffe, a past president of the
Detroit Chapter and cur-
rently a national board
member and chair of the na-
tional International Relations
Commission, said the AJ-
Committee "is a lay agency
and the lay officers are not
willing to accommodate to
Gordis' view."
He believes it is too late
for a compromise in the situ-
ation. "It seems that the ul-
timatum has already been
cast down ... and the agency
will now have to march along
without David Gordis."
Jaffe's son, David, is the
current president of the De-
troit Chapter. He says the
dispute has not affected the
working relationship between
Detroit and the national
office on the eve of Monday's
dinner here honoring George
Zeltzer and featuring Nobel
Laureate Isaac Bashevis
Singer. "It's a cooperative ef-
fort wth the national office
and it is proceeding
smoothly," he said.
Jaffe agreed with his father
that the ultimate control for
the AJCommittee lies with
its lay leadership "and there
is a great deal of unanimity
among the local chapter
members on this issue. I have
no criticism of David Gordis'
intellect and abilities," Jaffe
said. But "I have full confi-
dence in Ted Ellenoff and
the other administrative offi-
cers." 111
Doctors Support
Amsterdam (JTA) — A
conference attended by 60
psychiatrists and medical in-
ternists in Utrecht May 2
unanimously rejected a re-
cent report by two of their
colleagues who would deny
material benefits to wartime
victims of persecution unless
they could prove their cur-
rent medical problems stem-
med directly from their
treatment at the hands of the
Nazis.
