WINNERS

Hundreds of
Detroiters
marked Israel's
39th birthday
at the Jewish
Center on Sunday

Felafel, tabooly salad, a
15-school Bible Quiz and games
galore provided a festive air to
the communal celebration of
Israel Independence Day at the
Maple/Drake Jewish Community
Center last Sunday.
Hundreds of Detroiters
participated in the day's events,
including Israeli songs, dances
and contests for the kids.
Youngsters of all ages
participated in the Israeli
obstacle course, while the more
cerebral were involved in the
Bible Quiz and the El Al
airplane making contest.
Students from Temple Israel
sponsored a cake walk and
games they created themselves,
awarding prizes to participating
youngsters.
Approximately 60 youth
representing B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization, Michigan State
Temple Youth, United Synagoue
Youth and National Conference
of Synagogue Youth heard a
Middle East briefing by Senator
Carl Levin that was open only
to students.
Sunday's festivities were part
of a week-long series of Detroit
observances marking the State
of Israel. On Saturday, the
community observed Israel
Memorial Day at a special
observance at Adat Shalom
Synagogue. On Wednesday,
Israeli folksinger Hanon Yovel
performed at the Jewish
Community Center as part of
the Independence Day
observance. ❑

Akiva Received a plaque
and each team member was
awarded a $250 Israel Bond
certificate.

2ND PLACE

Each Hillel team member
received an illustrated
volume on the State of
Israel.

3RD PLACE

Each member of the B'nai
Moshe team was given a
one-year subscription to'an
Israeli magazine.

All contestants in the Bible
Quiz were awarded Israeli
commemorative coin sets
and recognition certificates.

Adat Shalom's Bible Quiz team puts their heads together: Stefanie Markman, Carin
Rockind and Julie McGlinnen.

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
